Grade 7 Common Fractions Lesson 8

This mathematics lesson plan is for grade 7 students and covers percentages and common fractions. The lesson will help students calculate percentage increases and decreases of whole numbers and solve word problems involving percentages. Students will practice calculating percentages of parts of wholes and whole numbers. They will also work on percentage word problems in small groups and independently. The lesson aims to emphasize that percentages are fractions expressed out of 100 and how to use common fractions when calculating with percentages.

MATHEMATICS LESSON PLAN

GRADE 7
TERM 1: April – June

PROVINCE:

DISTRICT:

SCHOOL:

TEACHER’S NAME:

DATE:

DURATION: 1 Hour

1. TOPIC:COMMON FRACTIONS.Percentages (Lesson 8)

CONCEPTS & SKILLS TO BE ACHIEVED:

By the end of the lesson, learners should be able to :

 Calculate percentage increase or decrease of whole numbers

 Solving problems in context involving percentages.

Grade 7 Lesson Plan: Term 2

COMMON FRACTION:Percentages (Lesson 8)
(Draft)
2. RESOURCES: DBE workbook 1, Textbooks
 Percentages of part of a whole
3. PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:  Percentage of whole numbers

4. REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF HOMEWORK (suggested time: 10 minutes)

Homework provides an opportunity for teachers to track learners’ progress in the mastery of
mathematics concepts and to identify the problematic areas which require immediate attention.
Therefore it is recommended that you place more focus on addressing errors from learner
responses that may later become misconceptions.

5. INTRODUCTION (Suggested time: 10 Minutes)

a
NB: Revise the meaning of fraction: ; where a is the numerator and b is the denominator.
b
Let learners complete the following activities.

ACTIVITY

Calculate:

a) What is 30 % of R 150 ?
b) What is 25% of R350?
c) What is 10% of 1 day?
40
d) How much is of 300 cents ?
100

6. LESSON PRESENTATION/DEVELOPMENT (Suggested time: 20 minutes)

Learning activities
Teaching activities
(Learners are expected to:)
ACTIVITY (Small groups)
a) Calculate the percentage increase if the price of a train of
R80 is increased to R120.
b) Calculate the percentage decrease if the price of disiel goes
down from 70 cents a litre to 35 cents a litre.
c) Calculate the percentage decrease if the price of disiel goes
down from 40 cents a litre to 25 cents a litre.

d) Ben did a survey. These were his findings.

In a group of 60 people he found that 12 people had blue
eyes, 15 people had brown eyes, 21 people had hazel eyes

and the rest had green eyes.
(i) What is the percentage of people with brown eyes from
the survey?
(ii) What is the percentage of people with hazel eyes from
the survey?

7. CLASSWORK (Suggested time: 15 minutes)

a) Calculate:
(i) 10% of R105
(ii) 50% of R1500
b) Calculate the percentage increase
(i) From R200 to R250
(ii) From R60 to R84
c) Calculate the percentage decrease
(i) From 50 cents to 30cents
(ii) From R450 to R200

d) Mandla’s dog has 8 puppies. Six of the puppies were females.

(i) What fraction of the puppies was male?
(ii) What percentage of the puppies was female?
8. CONSOLIDATION/ CONCLUSION & HOMEWORK (Suggested time: 5 minutes)
a) Emphasise that:

 Percentages are fractions expressed out of a hundred parts

 When calculating using percentages, use the equivalent common fraction form, where a
denominator is100.

b) The primary purpose of Homework is to give each learner an opportunity to demonstrate mastery of
mathematics skills taught in class. Therefore Homework should be purposeful and the principle of
‘Less is more’ is recommended, i.e. give learners few high quality activities that address variety of
skills than many activities that do not enhance learners’ conceptual understanding.
Carefully select appropriate activities from the Sasol-InzaloBooks,DBE workbooks and/or textbooks
for learners’ homework. The selected activities should address different cognitive levels.
