of Course, I Have Been Investigating and I Have My Notes On That, Let Me Explain

Luis and Carmen discuss animal migration. Luis explains that migration involves animals moving from one location to another, usually in search of better habitat conditions. Animals migrate for reasons like poor environmental conditions, weather changes, or lack of food. Not all animals are able to migrate due to risks like those faced by Chinese alligators. Carmen notes that many species, like birds, fish, reptiles and mammals migrate periodically or when threatened. Specific examples of migrating birds and quadrupeds are provided. The challenges animals face when migrating include dangers from hunger, thirst, fatigue, predators and humans. Ultimately, Carmen concludes that while risky, animal migration is generally beneficial as it helps species survive and maintain environmental balance.

ANIMAL MIGRATION

CARMEN: Hi Luis, how are you? Can you help me with a research assignment left at the
university?
LUIS: Hi Carmen, I'm fine, thanks for what your research work is about?
CARMEN: the topic is about animal migration, do you know what animal migration is?
LUIS: Well In my opinion, Migration is the displacement of animals from one location to
another; it can be by land, sea or air depending of the animal. They migrate looking for better
habitat conditions.

CARMEN: wow! That’s incredible, have you ever wondered why animals migrate?

LUIS: The are many reasons why an animal can migrate for example: A group of fishes may
have abandoned their habitat because of an Oil Spill. A group of Bears could have leave their
home because of Illegal Hunting A group of Birds might have move to another place because of
Acid Rain produced by contamination. I would like to point out that Animals migrate for
necessity such as bad conditions of their environment, bad weather or an area without food,
not for something superfluous such as exploring new places or socialize with other species.

CARMEN: wow, really interesting, Luis, do you know if all animals need to migrate?

LUIS: Just only the animals that need to look for a new habitat in order to survive, there are
also animals that need to migrate but they can´t because of their habitat conditions.
For example: The Chinese Alligator lives on Swamps, but it is risky for them to look for new
swamps, because usually Migrations are in enormous group of animals in order to guaranteed
their survival, but in his case they are a lonely animal, it’s more difficult and dangerous for
them. As a result some of them die in this process., Carmen, I imagine you have also been
investigating something on this topic, right? I ask you the following question: what kind of
animals are they migrating and how often are they doing it every year?

CARMEN: Of course, I have been investigating and I have my notes on that, let me explain,
there are many species of animals that migrate, for example birds, reptiles, fish, mammals
among others, they do it periodically, a year they may be migrating from one to three times a
year, I would like to point out that sometimes they do it every time they feel threatened, this is
incredible but the migration lasts several days depending on the distance where they would be
going. Luis, do you know what types of birds migrate?

LUIS: Yeah, I know some of them for example; let me talk you about the Sooty Shearwater:
This specie it´s located in Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. When it is an adult, realizes circular
migrations by the Arctic Waters. They can travel distances of 14,000 Km every day. Some of
them migrate from Alaska to New Zeeland reaching the 70,000 Km. By the age of 50 , The
Sooty Shearwater will have travel around 8 million kilometers., Carmen did you find out what
kind of quadruped animals migrate?

CARMEN: yes, I have as a result some well-known examples of quadrupeds that have been
migrating for a long time, for example wildebeests, zebras, caribou, antelopes, or elephants.
These animals migrate to find food sources and water wells to survive.
LUIS: wow, very interesting, what problems do they encounter when migrating to another
place?

CARMEN: let me think, I think they could be running many dangers when moving from
one place to another, let me give you some examples, one of the dangers they have is
that they could be dying on the road from hunger, thirst, fatigue and from being hunted
by other animals, another danger is that they can be hunted by man either for
consumption, sale or simply to keep them captive. I have no idea of all those dangers
that they have to go through at the time of migration; I really hope that all the migrating
animals arrive at their destination safe and sound.

LUIS: After researching all this, do you think animal migration is good or bad?

CARMEN: According to the research, I make a conclusion and I think that animal migration is
good because it helps preserve the continuity of the species and keep the environment in
balance, but it also has its risks, for example, a consequence is that animals also have diseases
that they can transmit to other animals or human beings from the place where they are going to
settle. Thanks for your help Luis you must be tired by so many questions, I already have to go, I
will see you next week.
