Creating Pipelines and Assigning Make-ons:
The Create Pipelines & Make-Ons function generates the listing aids that illustrate assembly
order and fab shop attached fittings via the options presented on the Create Pipelines & Make-
Ons dialog. This feature affects only items currently selected in the drawing. The defaults are
acceptable.

1. Prior to starting ‘Pipelines’: Click [F2] and drop the benchmark in “white-
space” near the Riser.

The Benchmark location influences how Pipelines are numbered and, for gridded and looped
piping, how fitting make-ons are desired.

2. SETTING \FABRICATION STANDARDS: CLICK ON THE ‘Pipe and Hanger Lengths’

tab:

Page 1
3. CLICK ON THE ‘Pipelines’ tab:

The ‘Companion Pipelines’ options:

”Merge Companion Pipelines…” will number lines without regard to any riser nipples and thus
would make one line out of 2 or 3 normally separate lines.
”Merge Pipeline Children” will merge companion pipes of differing pipe configurations and types
with the Pipeline that they are associated with. This option works in unison with the
‘Armover/Drop/Sprig Combinations’ and ‘Line Ownership’ options.
How Pipelines are created and which pipes are included with what Pipeline number is as much a
function of the selection process as it is of the options selected on this ‘PIPELINE’ tab.

The selection process for Pipeline creation:

By selecting only a dozen or so lines at a time, the Pipeline numbers can be better controlled and
many drawing errors can be caught and fixed before continuing to the next set of pipelines.

4. SELECT / EVERY / PIPE / ALL PIPES.

5. LISTING / PIPELINES / CREATE PIPELINES AND MAKE-ONS.

A progress dialog will

appear as AutoSPRINK
assembles information on
the selected pipes, then the
Pipelines & Make-Ons
dialog box will appear:

Some labeling
options are being
preset for subsequent
Pipelines and some
will be changed later.

Initial Label Visibility: Check boxes for labels that you wish to be visible. (The program will still
assign all types of labels, and will not change labels for pipelines that have already been created.)

The Preface option will preface segment label with incremented pipeline label (for example, Line
#1, segment 1A, segment 1B, etc.)

Pipeline Labels: To use the default prefix for a pipeline label (based on the pipeline type), leave
the Lines Prefix and/or Mains Prefix boxes unchecked. The default prefix labels will be CM for
Cross Mains, and BL for Branch Lines. The Lines Prefix option is restricted to Branch Lines only.
The Mains Prefix option is restricted to Cross Mains only. To define your own prefix, check the
desired box and enter the prefix to use in the adjoining field (This can be up to 10 characters
long). The Others prefix may be used for all other pipeline labels not defined. If no prefix is
specified, the pipeline type will be used to determine a prefix.

Note: Drains and Undergrounds are considered as "Others," and will be labeled as such.

Line Label Placement: Specify where labels will initially be placed for mains and for all other
pipelines. Choices include the near end, center, or far end of the pipeline. Multiple labels can be
placed for each pipeline.

7. Select DEFAULT MAINS PROPERTIES and match the settings shown below,
then click OK:

8. Click on the PIPELINE SEGMENTS Tab and match the settings shown below,
then click OK:

If more than 9
pieces of main
are expected, this
initial label should
be A-01 rather
than A-1.

9. Click CREATE PIPELINES & ASSIGN MAKE-ONS to begin the process.

A progress dialog will appear showing what is being done during the creation process (which may
take several seconds). When this disappears, pipelines will appear in the drawing.

Pipeline Segment Tab

A Pipeline Segment, a section of a Pipeline which constitutes the end of one pipe to the next
Pipe Outlet, is recognized as an individual element within the Pipeline itself.. Its properties page is
located within the Settings Menu: Default Properties: Labels: Pipeline Segment Tab. Within
this tab, users assign the initial pipeline segment label for the individual pipelines in a drawing.
Here, the Pipeline Segment and its labels are modifiable on a 'per-segment' basis. If users wish
to display individual pipeline segments' labels in the drawing for the selected pipeline(s), then
users need to place a check-mark within their corresponding boxes in the bottom list control table
(shown in Pipeline Segments tab image on right). If selected, the Displayed column indicates
how each pipeline segment's label will appear in the drawing.

Pipeline Segments display alphanumerically in the list control. As an added convenience, range-
select has been enabled within the Pipeline Segment list control by pressing the [Shift] key along
with the chosen segments.

Page 5
Pipeline Segment Visibility
The segment's appearance is initially set within the tab's Segment Visibility dialog box. Pipeline
Segments can be hidden from view in the drawing. Alternatively, two other visibility options are
available: Show the segment's arrow only, or show the segment's arrow and balls in the drawing,
shown in blue. The arrow and ball size is set here as well (defaults to 3/16"), and users assign
their sizes according to how they should display on paper.

Pipeline Outline Display

The Pipeline's Outline is always excluded from displaying when printing, since the outlines can
interfere with other elements. Users choose when the Pipeline's Outline should display in the
drawing: Always, Never, or only for those segments that are selected in the drawing.

The Renumber Pipelines dialog allows users to renumber any selected pipelines either
automatically according to a preset order or manually. To automatically renumber selected
pipelines according to their distance from the benchmark, select Ascending or Descending.
When Manual Renumbering is selected, the Manual Renumbering section becomes active.
Current Pipeline shows the name of the pipeline that is currently being edited. Proposed
Pipeline shows what the selected pipeline will become once the Renumber command is run. The
sections between these two columns may be edited: Prefix, Number, and Sub-Pipeline.

10. VIEW / HIGHLIGHT MAKE-ON CONNECTORS to

make sure this feature is checked, then Save
your drawing.

Page 6
Highlight Make-On Connectors (Pro and Ultimate Levels only) illustrates the make-on end of
a fitting by highlighting the make-on end. In the picture, the tee will be made-on Bull-Head to the
vertical pipe.

Assigning a List Area:

An assigned List Area gathers information on selected system components, grouping them under
a user-specified designation for presentation in a Bill of Materials or Stock Listing Report.

You can specify whether unselected elements with a make-on relationship to a selected element
should be included in the List Area you are creating. Check the check box in the Assign List Area
dialog box to do this. (Note that fabricated elements always retain their partnerships, regardless of
how list areas are created or changed.)

The List Area Properties page includes options for fabrication color schemes as well as editable
fields for projected Stock Listing, Fabrication, Pipe on Job Date and Installations dates. Users can
define a Primary, Secondary, and even a Tertiary Fabrication Color if necessary by choosing from
their respective drop-down menus.

The other tabs comprising List Area's Properties Page define its component materials as well as
extra or added materials. For additional information on the Extra and Added Material tabs, go to
the Help Menu.

11. SELECT / EVERY IN RECTANGLE /

ALL SPRINKLER SYSTEM
COMPONENTS then stretch a
rectangle around the small bay.

12. LISTING / ASSIGN LIST AREA…

Enter "Small Bay System
Components" in the Assign
List Area box, then click OK.

All selected sprinkler components are now assigned to the newly created list area.

13. Left-click in open space to clear the selection and Save your drawing.

The Listing Manager:

14. LISTING / LISTING MANAGER…

Select the list

area you
created.

Page 8
15. Click GENERATE BILL OF MATERIAL(S)

16. Click OK on the BOM dialog. The

cursor is now equipped to place a
chart of the BOM into the drawing, so
move the cursor south of the small
bay and left-click to insert the chart.

The Bill of Materials tool compiles a wide variety of

product information for each item implemented in the
drawing. It then equips the cursor to place BOM data, in
chart form, into the drawing. Information displayed in the
chart is user-selectable, and the chart can also be
exported as a text file for printing.

To use this tool, select Bill of Materials from the Listing

menu. The Define B.O.M. Characteristics dialog will
appear. In this dialog, click in the boxes next to
manufacturers and fields to be included in the BOM, and
enter a title for the BOM in the field at the top of the dialog.
You can select what information to display using the fields at the bottom of the dialog; use the
arrow keys to move items on or off the list of displayed information. You can also determine
whether or not to include job information in this dialog. Once all settings are as desired, click OK.
The cursor will now show a ghost image of the chart; use this as a guide in placing the BOM in
your drawing. Once placed, the BOM can be dragged to a new location if desired. The BOM can
also be printed from the dialog by clicking the Print button.

To further refine the contents and appearance of the BOM, open its Properties dialog by right-
clicking on the BOM and selecting Properties. On the Text Table tab, you can change the title
that shows at the top of the BOM, and add or remove information from the display. Click on an
item in the list in the Define Columns field and click on Edit or Edit Text to edit it, or use the Add
and Remove buttons to add or remove information. Once done, click OK to execute changes.
You can also click the Export button to export this information to a file for printing. In the Text
Table Export Options dialog, click on the Browse button to specify a directory and filename for
the export file.

Note: If running the Bill of Material via the Listing Manager, the name of the list area selected will
appear in the heading area at the top (where "Bill of Material" appears).

A B.O.M. would be more appropriate for a small T.I., residential system or perhaps a pump room.

17. Left-click in open space to clear the selection and Save the drawing.

Page 9
Stocklisting Reports:
18. FILE / PRINTING / STOCKLISTING

19. Make sure Small Bay System Components is checked in the List Areas
window and click GENERATE REPORT DATA.

When the process is complete, there should be data in the Pipe Statistics section (lower half of
the Report dialogue), indicating the scrap percentage for each pipe type and diameter. There
should also be a set of reports listed to preview or print in the upper right. The list of reports is
data dependent and will only show reports for which data exists.

20. Click in the box next to the Material Summary report and click the Preview
button. The Material Summary report is displayed.

21. Click Done and Save the drawing.

CONGRATULATIONS, YOUR SAMPLE DRAWING IS NOW COMPLETE AND READY FOR PLOTTING.
