Duplex Pump
OBJECTIVES
Many of hydraulic piston pumps are used as the main pump for a hydraulic excavator. When a
hydraulic excavator is remodeled, the main pump that is used for it is improved or remodeled as
required.
In recent years, there is growing demand for reduction of the overall length of main pumps to
permit decreasing the rear turning radius of hydraulic excavators (as a means of improving the
safety) and reducing the width of vehicle bodies (as a means of meeting the new transport
regulations). There is also demand for reduction of the size of hydraulic pumps by increasing
their power density.
To meet those demands, it is necessary to increase the pressure, rotational speed, and efficiency
of hydraulic pumps. This requires solving several problems described later. So far, our R&D
efforts have produced tangible results in the following tasks.
Pump is a device that expends energy in order to raise, transport, or compress fluids. The earliest
pumps were devices for raising water, such as the Persian and Roman waterwheels and the more
sophisticated Archimedes screw.
A duplex pump is a pump typically found in waste water treatment plants and oil fields. It consists
of two pumps that alternate the pumping process, thereby allowing it to be more efficient than a
single version. This pump has a higher flow rate due to its not having a dead spot in the pump
stroke. As one pump is completing its stroke cycle, the other is beginning its stroke — maintaining
maximum pumping action without a break in the cycle.
The first duplex pump was steam operated. It consisted of two steam chambers as well as two
pump housings. The pumps were capable of pumping twice as much liquid as a single-stage
pump. There are no dead spots in this type of pump. The pumping cylinders are constantly under
pressure and operate just enough out of time with each other to ensure that one or the other is
always pumping.

Duplex Pump
The steam-operated pump was replaced with a duplex pump, which operates on compressed air.
The compressed air acts in the same manner as the steam and maintains constant pressure on the
cylinders of the pump. The original steam duplex pump was created in the 1800s and steam-
operated pumps are still in use, but compressed air has taken over as the primary operating
system.
Duplex pumps are common in both single and dual acting designs. Due to some of
the benefits over simplex pumps, and simpler design than other reciprocating
pumps, they are often a preferred pump for many applications.
Essentially, a single action duplex pump is two simplex pumps running at 180
degrees from each other. As one plunger or piston is pumping fluid into the outlet
port, the other is drawing in from the inlet. A dual action is similar in style but is
only offset at 90 degrees. Theoretically, a dual action duplex operates using four
single-acting plungers or pistons. Keeping the rotation at 180 degrees would create
two overlapping sets of plungers or pistons. A 90-degree offset helps to stabilize
the flow. See the flow characteristics below for more information.

Duplex Pump
APPLICATION
The duplex pump is used where a high volume of sustained pumping is required. Waste water
treatment plants utilize the pumps because of the need to move large quantities of water without
the threat of backwash. Any backwash could potentially contaminate large freshwater storage
tanks and render the system unfit for use.
In oil fields, the need to pump large quantities of water to cool drilling heads as well as to flush
out the boring holes requires the use of a duplex pump. The ability to move the great quantity of
water allows the drilling rigs to operate at a much faster pace than those equipped with a single-
stage pump.
Duplex pumps are also used to pump diesel fuel and heating oils that do not require heating. The
thin viscosity of these oils allow the pumps to transfer them to holding tanks as well as to pass
the oils through a strainer to clean them of impurities. Thicker oils require heating to allow them
to be pumped. The thin make-up of the heating oil allows the oil to flow freely through the
pumps at a high rate.
In the event of a failure of a primary pump, duplex pumps can be used to provide a secondary
means of fuel transfer. Each pump in a duplex set is sized to meet the full flow requirements of the
system. Pump controllers can be set for any of the following common operating modes:
• Lead / Lag (Primary / Secondary): The lead (primary) pump is selected by the user and the
lag (secondary pump operates when a failure of the primary pump is detected.
• Alternating: Operates per Lead / Lag (Primary / Secondary) except that the operating pump
and lead / lag status alternate on consecutive starts. A variation is to alternate the pumps
based on the operating time (hour meter) of the lead pump.

FLOW CHARACTERISTIC
Duplex pump has a steadier flow than simplex pumps. However, their flow still has a large
variation. In a single action duplex pump, the maximum flow velocity is 160% of the average.
That is, every rotation of the crankshaft, the flow varies from 0% to 160% of the average flow
rate. In a double acting duplex pump, the maximum flow velocity only varies between 111% and
79% of the average flow rate.
Note that the dual action charts are made specifically for a plunger pump. In a dual action piston
pump, pump chambers one and three would look similar to that shown above, but chambers two
and four would have a slightly lower relative velocity. This is since one side of the piston
requires the drive rod, reducing the usable volume within these pump chambers.

RECOMMENDATIONS
When searching for the best duplex house for rent, you may want to consider more than just the
structure. While a ranch style duplex house for rent will usually offer less noise than a two-story
setting, this type of home places both dwellers on the same lawn. If you select a two-story duplex
house for rent, you might choose the upper half to lessen the noise that emanates through the
ceiling. Since half of the safety, such as fire risk, is dependent on the other dwellers in the unit,
you may also want to consider the character of the people residing in the other half of the duplex
when choosing a house to rent.
One of the most common complaints from some people living in a duplex house for rent is noise
from the neighbors. When searching for the best rental property, you may want to avoid any type
of duplex house for rent that places you under the other tenants' living space. A ranch style home
with the living quarters divided in the middle will typically offer the least amount of residual
sound transferring from one family to the other. In two-story homes, you may choose to occupy
the upper level to reduce the sound of overhead foot traffic coming through the ceiling. When
choosing the upper level of a duplex house for rent, you may also benefit from a deck or balcony
to offer relaxation instead of the yard that may be shared with the other tenants.
It is important to choose a rental home that is up to date on safety issues, such as fireproof
barriers between duplexes and fire escapes on upper floors. This factor is doubled when choosing
a duplex. The chance of accidents increases significantly in a duplex due to the increase in
families within the home. You may want to interview any current resident in a duplex house for
rent that you are considering moving into. Additionally, you will want to make certain that the
renters in the other half of your duplex share your beliefs in fire safety, cleanliness and any other
aspect of your life that you hold near and dear.
Choosing a duplex that has occupants who cross your belief system can prove to be painful
existence for you. To be certain that you can coexist with your neighbor, meet with them and
introducing yourself prior to making a commitment to the duplex house for rent. Other factors
that you will want to base your selection on are the proximity of schools, shopping centers and
your workplace.
