Summary of Revised Codes For Concrete in 2018

The document summarizes revisions made to BIS codes related to concrete testing. Key changes include introducing new workability and self-compacting concrete tests, revising procedures for existing slump and flow table tests, adding guidance for core testing and non-destructive ultrasonic pulse velocity testing, and aligning the density and water penetration test standards with international codes. Overall, the revisions serve to update testing standards with best practices and provide more comprehensive and consistent requirements.

Summary of Revised BIS Codes for Concrete in 2018

IS 1199 (Part 2) : 2018 “ Fresh Concrete – Methods of Sampling, Testing and Analysis”
(Determination of Consistency of Fresh Concrete)

Sl.No Remarks
1 Workability Test : Apart from the Four Workability Tests (Slump Test, Vee Bee Test, Compaction Factor Test and Flow
Table Test) newly Introduced Degree of compactability test and Slump Flow for High Fluidity test
2 Slump Test
2a Slump Test Applicable = Slumps between 10mm to 210mm
2b Fill the concrete in the Slump Cone = 3 layers (previous code = 4 layers)
2c Lifting time for slump Cone = 5± 2 sec
2d The duration of total slump Test = within 180 sec ( previous code = 120 sec)
2e Slump is valid only if slump test yields a True Slump, (Shear and collapse tests as being invalid as the concrete lacks
plasticity and cohesiveness)
3 Degree of Compactability
3a Degree of compactability = The ratio of concrete height without vibration to concrete height with vibration.
The degree of compactability test is valid for a range of values lying between 1.04 to 1.46.

4 Flow Table Test

4a Fill the mould with concrete in two equal layers and tamp each layer lightly 10 times with tamping rod (Previous code = 25
times with tamping rod)
5 Vee Bee Consistometer Test
5a Vee Bee Consistometer Test is unsuitable If Vee Bee time less than 5 sec or more than 30 sec. Modified Vee Bee
Consistometer test is prescribed for very stiff dry concretes (roller compacted concrete)

IS 1199 (Part 6) : 2018 “ Fresh Concrete – Methods of Sampling, Testing and Analysis”
(Tests on Fresh Self Compaction Concrete)
Remarks
Newly SCC Code introduced
SCC Tests : 1. Slump Flow Test & T500 Test, 2.V-Funnel Test, 3. L-Box test , and 4. Sieve Segregation Resistance Test
Test Limits are mentioned in IS 10262 : 2019 .
IS 1199 (Part 6) : 2018 “ Fresh Concrete – Methods of Sampling, Testing and Analysis”
(Tests on Fresh Self Compaction Concrete)
Remarks
Newly SCC Code introduced
SCC Tests : 1. Slump Flow Test & T500 Test, 2.V-Funnel Test, 3. L-Box test , and 4. Sieve Segregation Resistance Test
Test Limits are mentioned in IS 10262 : 2019 .

IS 1199 (Part 7) : 2018 “ Fresh Concrete – Methods of Sampling, Testing and Analysis”
(Determination of Setting Time of Concrete by Penetration Resistance)
Remarks
Previous Code : IS 8142 : 1976
Previous code and Revised code almost same. In the Revised code explained how to calculate IST and FST from the
Graph.

IS 1199 (Part 1) : 2018 “ Fresh Concrete – Methods of Sampling, Testing and Analysis”
(Sampling of fresh concrete)
Sl.No Remarks
1 A concrete sample to be used for strength test = 0.02 m3
2 For other tests ( Air Content, temperature and workability tests ) small quantity may suffice.
3 When sampling from a stationary batch mixer or RMC Truck, disregard the very first and the very last of the
discharge ( about 10 to 15%).
4 Slump, Temperature and air content tests should start within 5 min after obtaining the final portion of the composite
sample. Cube casting shall commence within 15 min.

IS 1199 (Part 3) : 2018 “ Fresh Concrete – Methods of Sampling, Testing and Analysis”
(Determination of Density of Fresh Concrete)
Sl.No Remarks
1 For measure wet concrete density, Hand compaction = min 25 per layer
2 Additional calculations (a) Determination of volume of concrete per Batch (b) Yield per bag of cement.
IS 516 (Part 4) : 2018 “ Hardened Concrete – Methods of Test”
(Sampling, Preparing and Testing of Concrete Cores)
Sl.No Remarks
1 IS 516 – Part-4 Code Newly introduced for Core Tests.
2 Age of concrete for core test = Min. 14 days for Grade of Concrete up to M25 . For higher grades cores may be
taken at an earlier age
3 Diameter of core = The ratio of diameter to nominal maximum size of aggregate shall be greater than 3. (Preferred
core diameter 100mm for 20mm agg.
4 The preferred L/D = 2.0
