Linear Mensuration: Definitions

The document discusses linear mensuration and different systems of measurement. It defines linear mensuration as the measurement of distances and lengths in one dimension. Two main systems are described: the English system which uses feet and inches as standard units, and the metric system which uses meters as the standard unit. Conversion formulas and tables are provided to convert between the two systems of measurement.

LINEAR MENSURATION

DEFINITIONS

1. Mensuration – the mathematics of measurement.

2. Linear Mensuration – measurement in one dimension or measurement of distances/length.

TWO SYSTEMSOFMEASUREMENT

andtheMetricsystemorSystemsInternational (S.I)which originatedin France.

ENGLISH SYSTEM

The English system is based on the foot as the standard unit of reference. A foot is divided into 12 equal
parts called inches. Each inch is subdivided into16equal parts (16 graduations) and thesmallest
partisread1/16.

The standard equivalents of length in the English system are as follows

12 inches(in.) = 1foot (ft.)

3feet (ft.) = 1 yard (yd.)

METRIC SYSTEM

The basic/standard unit of length in the metric system is the meter. The meterisdividedinto100centimeters.
Eachcentimeterisdividedinto10millimeters.

Other units of length and their equivalents in meters are as follows:

1 millimeter = 0.001 meter

1 centimeter =0.01 meter
1 decimeter = 0.1 meter
1 kilometer = 1000 meters

We symbolize these lengths as follows:

1 millimeter = 1 mm
1 centimeter = 1 cm
1 meter = 1 m
1 decimeter = 1 dm
1 kilometer = 1 km

CONVERSION TABLES

MetricConversion Table

1 millimeter = 0.03937 inches(in.)

1 centimeter = .3937 inches(in.)

1 meter = 39.37 inches(in.)

English ConversionTable

1 inch (in.) = 25.4mm. = 2.54cm. = .0254(m.)

1foot (ft.) = 304.8mm. = 30.48 cm = .3048(m.)

1 yard (yd.) = 914.4mm = 91.4 cm = .9144(m.)

CONVERSION FORMULAS

Length in inches x 0.0254 = lengthinmeters

Length in inches x 2.54 = lengthin centimeters

Length infeet ÷ 3.28 = lengthinmeters

Length inmeters x 39.37 = lengthin inches

Length in inches ÷ 39.37 = lengthinmeters

Length infeet x 0.305 = lengthinmeters

Length infeet x 30.5 = lengthin centimeters
