To the Learner

This Learner Materials for Grade 4 Mathematics was written in

response to the basic goal of education ---“to prepare learners to
become productive and worthy citizens of our country”.

It was specially designed meaningful and provides varied activities

that will help you know how well-equipped you are with the background
knowledge skills that are prerequisites for the lesson.

Lessons are based on the Most Essentials Learning

Competencies (MELC). These are presented in easy and interesting
ways using simple language and, in most cases, using models so that
you can “visualize” the concept (s) being developed.

Learning Mathematics is fun. Enjoy it. Share what you learn with
others.

Using a cubic unit of measurement such as cubic centimeter and

cubic meters, the learners can visualize that they can use an easier way
of finding the volume of cubes and rectangular prisms by multiplying the
number of rows by the number of columns and by the number of layers.
This leads the learner to derive the formula V = l x w x h for finding the
volume of a rectangular prism and V= e x e x e or e³ for finding the
volume of a cube.

Solving the volume of a rectangular prism allow the learners to

apply the knowledge and skills they learned.
Vocabulary List
 Volume is the amount of space enclosed by a space figure.
 Rectangular prism is a solid figure that has six faces,
twelve edges and eight vertices.
 Vertex (vertices in plural form) is the corner of a shape.
 Edge is a segment where two faces of a prism meet.
 Some rectangular prism have faces that are shaped like
rectangles and squares.

Let’s Try This

Find the volume of each figure.

Study the illustration

This is a cube. It has length, width and height.
To find the volume of it multiply the length, width and height.

3cm (height)

3 cm (width)
3 cm (length)

Volume = length x width x height

= 3 x 3 x 3
= 27 cubic centimeter

Answer: There are 27 cubic centimeter or 27 cm³

The box below is in the shape of a rectangular prism. It contains

cubes arranged in rows, columns, and layers. What is the volume of the
prism?

How many rows of cubes are there?

How many columns of cubes are there?
How many layers of cubes are there?
Below is a cube. A cube also has six faces, twelve edges, and
eight vertices. Each face is shaped like a square with equal lengths of
sides.

3 rows of 3 cubes
9 cubes in all 3 layers of 3 rows of 3 cubes
27 cubes in all

Study these examples:

height (3 units)
width (2 units)
length (4 units)

4 rows of 2 cubes
3 layers of 4 rows of 2 cubes
24 cubes in all
27 cubes in all

How do you find the

You can count the number of cubes to get the volume of the
rectangular prism.
By counting there are 24 cubes in all.

You can also multiply the number of rows by the number of

columns and by the number of layers to find the volume.

V = 4 rows x 2 columns x 3 layers

= 24 cubes
Let V be the volume of a rectangular prism. If l is the length and w
is the width and h is the height of the rectangular prism, then

V=lxwxh
=4x2x3
= 24 cubic units

Therefore, the volume of the rectangular prism is 24 cubic units.
