Qualitative Definition of Information

Marian Mazur, a Polish cybernetician, defines information as anything that has form. He believes information is obtained through the process of informing, where an object is transformed into an image or data that represents the original object. Mazur distinguishes between macro-level information as knowledge that can influence decision making, and micro-level information as energy or data in communication systems. He also describes different types of informing processes, including perfect informing, simulating, dissimulating, and confusing processes. Despite providing a flexible definition of information that accepts different experiences, Mazur's qualitative definition retains some rigidity through its use of a transformation process flowchart to describe how information is obtained.

Qualitative Definition of Information by Mazur

Narrative Version of the Presentation

Marian Mazur, a Polish cybernetician, defines information as anything in form.

Because he regards the action of ‘informing’ as relevant to information itself, our group has
deduced that information is obtained through the process of informing where it acquires a
specific form derived from a perspective. He explains that informing involves a
transformation of originals (objects) into images to which we believe the originals are in form
of data and the processed form becomes information in form of images.
Mazur also distinguishes views of information to which our group relates to the nature
of information. Macro-viewed information, which can influence decision-making, is
information as knowledge while micro-viewed information, which he linked to elementary
signals in communication systems, is information as energy or data.
Significantly, Mazur further explains that informing involves transformation of
originals (objects) into images. In a more accurate term, trans-informing is used to refer to a
perfect informing process with lesser practical importance but greater accurate content. In
contrast, he classifies basic types of unbalanced informing processes into three: simulating
(images containing more information than originals); dissimulating (images containing lesser
information than originals); and confusing (a combination of both). Also, Mazur classifies
pseudo-informing, dis-informing, and para-informing under degenerated informing and
reduced informing in contrast to perfect informing process or trans-informing.
In contrast to the other definitions, Mazur manages to give a more flexible definition
to the concept of information. His definition of information is more accepting of different
kinds of experiences and less rigid since it accepts anything that has a form of sorts.
However, despite its flexibility, there is also a rigidity present in the qualitative definition.
Mazur uses a flowchart process to describe its transformation process and that could hinder
some forms of information from being processed.
In conclusion, Mazur’s definition of the information concept is more focused on its
form and the experience the user gets from it. This definition also takes into account the
possible learnings we could possibly obtain from the transformation of information into
different forms. Despite it being an objective view of information, this qualitative definition
still has some rigidity to it despite its focus on form due to its flowchart process.
