SUMMARY:

American well is the invention of Ido and Roy Schoenberg. The Co-founder brother’s
founded online company in an attempt to improve access and change the delivery of health
care by having physicians available online. It changes the interaction between the patient and
the physician. In today’s health care model the patient is subject to physician appointment
and may have to wait days, weeks or even months to obtain an appointment. American well’s
vision of delivering health care model by using the internet to connect the patient and the
physician within minutes. American Well integrated IT and health care services to facilitate
better redistribution of medical records and services on a single platform. It allows the patient
and the physician to interact in real time and taking appointments any time and anywhere
using online built technologies such as personalise online interaction, payment which can be
done through credit card and online record keeping. It also integrated with insurance
providers in a B2B model.

Q.1 Do you share the assessment of the founders regarding the potential of online care
to revolutionize the health care delivery?

Ans. As the US economy has grown tremendously in the past few decades they have
always lagged in mode of delivery in the health sector, beginning from mode of payment to
taking appointment from doctors. Being in the era of digitalization, the founders of
American well have tried to bridge this gap by providing user based platform for patients
through internet . The founders themselves being doctors have seen patients waiting for long
hours even days to meet with specialist. As per the reference exhibit 11 we can understand
that patients wait from 8 days in cities like Miami to 63 days in Boston on average just for
appointment with the primary care physician , this wait in appointment and delay in bill- pay
services has always plagued the health care services . American wells novel service model
-Online Care with revolutionary ideas stemming from a number of developments in the field
of telecommunication and computer based tools can manage , communicate and collect
information about health care and transactions .With a range of services including bill pay
service , appointment scheduling and communication of lab reports, no longer are the
patients confined by physical location and time availability of physicians the service has
eliminated these restriction and has linked the excess demand with excess supply. Online –
care is truly a novel idea capable of revolutionizing the health care industry. Technology like
online care are solving the problem of entrenched doctor shortage where a physician can be
anywhere anytime which is not the case with the traditional health care system. The
technology will also persuade American people to pursue healthcare they don’t need exactly
as patients still perceived seeing a doctor in traditional healthcare. American Well online care
makes it very convenient for the people to get it and for consumers, convenience is the king.
Q3 – If you were in the shoes of American Well Management, would you pursue any of the
next generation options in 2010 or would you just focus on the core platform with the core
target market?

A – As a part of the American Well Management, we wouldn’t suggest pursuing any of the
next generation options because at the end of 2009 there was a limited adoption of the
company’s core service and would further require additional hiring and securing additional
funds. Although the cofounders believed that their model had applications well beyond the
health-care industry, pursuing them would mean diverting resources to focus on those options
and which would in turn mean undermining the company’s initial Online Care rollout.

Not pursuing those options would mean leaving opportunities for other players in the market
to seize them and the most important thing for the cofounders was to maintain excellent client
satisfaction which can be achieved if the company’s core service reaches to a wider audience.

Only then can the company be sure that it is achieving this and then plan to broaden it’s
horizon beyond it’s core service.
