Liquefiable

Low plasticity silts and sands with SPT N values less than 25 within the upper 20 meters of soil are generally susceptible to liquefaction during earthquakes, which can be avoided by not splicing precast piles where loose to very loose saturated sands may liquefy. Precast prestressed concrete piles over 20 meters can be spliced to reduce handling stress and costs, though splicing should be avoided in loose saturated sands susceptible to liquefaction.

 Low plasticity silts and sands within the upper 20 m with SPT N Values < 25 (common

phenomena in Bangladesh) are generally liquefiable due to the ground acceleration during

earthquake (depending upon the magnitude of earthquake). [Ref.: AASHTO LRFD Bridge

Design Specification]

 Where loose to very loose saturated sands are experienced within the subsurface soil profile

such that liquefaction of these soils could occur, splicing in the Precast Piles are avoided,

considering the effects of vulnerability of earthquake waves.

 Precast Prestressed Concrete Piles requiring length over 20 m can thus be spliced to

minimize the handling stress, reduce reinforcing PC strands and minimize/economize

handling/pitching efforts. Attached: typical spliced pile [ Ref.: FDOT Design Standards, FY

2012/13]

 Regarding HDD, this method is generally used in local field in Bangladesh.
