BCT 523 Structural Design Test 1 (RC Design) (Answer 3 Questions Only)
Question 1.
A rectangular beam is 250 mm wide by 500 mm effective depth. The beam is simply
supported and spans 7 m. The dead load including an allowance for self weight is 19 kN/m
and the imposed load is 10 kN/m. The materials to be used are grade 25 concrete and grade
460 reinforcement. Design the bending and shear reinforcement. Check for deflection.
Assume cover is 25mm.
Question 2.
Design the longitudinal and shear reinforcement for a 275 mm square, short braced column
which supports an axial load of 1300 kN and bending moments of 40 kNm about the x-x axis
and 30 kNm about the y-y axis. Assume fcu=30 N/mm2 , fy=460 N/mm2 and cover to all
reinforcement is 35mm.
Question 3.
A continuous one-way slab has three equal spans of 4.0 m each. The slab depth is assumed
to be 300 mm. The loading is as follows :
Dead loads ; including self-weight, partitions, ceiling ,Gk = 79.8 kN/m2
Dead loads due to finishes only; Gk = 1.0kN/m2
Imposed load; Qk = 20.0 kN/m2
The construction materials are grade 40 concrete and grade 460 reinforcement. The cover
required is 40 mm. Design the slab and show the reinforcement on a sketch of the cross -
section.
Question 4.
A footing is required to resist characteristic axial loads of 1000 kN dead and 350 kN imposed
from a 400 mm square column. The safe bearing pressure on the soil is 200 kN/m 2 and the
characteristic material strengths are fcu = 35 N/mm2 and fy = 460 N/mm2. Assuming a
thickness of footing is 600 mm and the minimal cover is 40mm for concrete cast against
blinding.
