Design of Singly Reinforced Beam

Design a singly reinforced beam of clear span of 5m to support a working live load of 15 kN/m. Adopt M-
20 grade concrete, and Fe-415 steel.

Assume Bearing = 380mm

Input:
l = 5 m
LL = 15 kN/m
fck = 20 N/mm2
fy = 415 N/mm2
Bearing = 380 mm 0.38 m

Solution:

le = l+tw = 5.38 m 5380 mm

Size of beam

d = le/12 = 448.33 mm

Provide, D = 500 mm

CC = 25 mm
Assume
dia. = 20 mm

Ce = CC+(dia./2) = 35 mm
de = D-Ce = 465 mm 0.465 m
b = (1/3)*d to (2/3)*d
155 310 mm
say,b= 250 mm

Provide, size of beam = b X D

= 250 X 500 mm
0.25 X 0.5 m
Effective span, le: least of the following
i) C/C distance b/w bearing (le) = 5.38 m
ii) Clear span + eff. Depth = l+de = 5.465 m

Therefore, effective span, l = 5.38 m

Load calculation:
i) DL or self wt of beam = b*D*𝛾 = 3.125 kN/m
ii) LL = 15 kN/m

Total load,w = 18.125 kN/m

Ultimate load (wu) = 1.5*wu = 27.188 kN/m
Say, wu = 27.5 kN/m
Factored Moment (Mu)
Mu = (wu*l2)/8 = 99.500 kN-m

Check for effective depth (d)

2
Equating Mu = Mu,lim = 0.138fckbd for Fe415

dreq = 𝑀𝑢 = 379.7406 mm < de

0 ⋅ 138𝑓𝑐𝑘 𝑏

Design is Safe

Area of tension reinforcement (Ast)

𝑀𝑢
= 1.84
𝑏𝑑2

Refer SP16, Table 2 (fck & fy) to obtain pt value

pt = 0.580

2
Ast,p = ptbd/100 = 674.25 mm

Check for minimum reinforcement

2
Ast,req = 0.85*b*d/fy = 238.1024 mm < Ast,p

OK

Provide bar dia. = 20 mm

2
ast = 𝜋d2/4 = 314.16 mm

No. of bars = Ast/ast = 2.146204 say 3

Provide 3 20 dia as tension reinforcement

2
Ast,p = n*(𝜋d2/4) = 942.5 mm

Design of shear reinforcement

Vu = wu*l/2 = 73.975 kN = 73975 N

𝜏v = Vu/bd

2
𝜏v = Vu/bd = 0.64 N/mm < 𝜏c,max = 2.8
(IS 456:2000, Table 20) N/mm2
% of steel = 100Ast/bd = 0.81 %
Refer IS: 456-2000, table 19
2
𝜏c = 0.574 N/mm

𝜏v > 𝜏c

Therefore, Shear reinforcement is not necessary

Shear carried by concrete = 𝜏c*bd = 66.7275 kN

Balance shear carried by stirrups (Vw) = Vu - 𝜏cbd = 7.2475 kN

= 7247.5 N

Providing 2Legged - 8 mm dia stirrups

Spacing of stirrups = Sv = 0.87fyAsvd/Vw

2
Asv =2*(𝜋d2/4) = 100.53 mm

Sv = 2328.80 mm

Maximum spacing: Least of the following

i) Sv = 2328.80 mm
(minimum shear
ii) Sv = (0.87fyAsv)/(0.4b) =
362.97 mm reinforcement)
iii) 0.75d = 348.75 mm
iv) = 300 mm

Therefor, Provide 2L-8mm dia @ 300.00 c/c

Check for deflection

Percentage steel provided, pt = 0.81 %

Stress in steel at service loads,

2
fs = 0.58fy (Ast,r/Ast,p) = 172.197 N/mm

Read out modification factor (Kt) from curve (from fig. 4 of IS 456) for
2
fs = 172.197 N/mm
pt = 0.81 %

Therefore, Kt = 1.4

(l/d)max = 20kt = 28

(l/d)provided = 11.570

Therefore, (l/d)max > (l/d)provided

Hence, OK
