This document contains an end term examination response from a student named Kumail Azhar regarding the continued relevance of George Orwell's novel Animal Farm. In the response, the student makes three main points: 1. Animal Farm is still relevant today in depicting how leaders can abuse power and control citizens through propaganda and establishing a police state, as Napoleon and the pigs did in the novel. 2. It is not fair for those with more education or skills, like the pigs, to have more influence in decision making as everyone has a right to have their voice heard. 3. In Pakistan, while citizens can vote, the army still guides many political, defense, and foreign policy decisions, showing that checks

Is Animal Farm still relevant today? If yes, how far the relevance is valid and
in what context does it apply to? Discuss by referring to the certain incidents
and characters from the novel.

Yes, the novel Animal Farm is easily relevant to now a days. In this novel, George Orwell shows
that normal citizen of a country need to be very watchful to make sure that their leader do not
stop the control of government. The aim of the Orwell work in this novel is to criticize the
totalitarian government of Nazi and Russia, but the idea in this book he has given may be applied
to any tyrannical government.

Napoleon and his small puppies (those who become the wild dogs now and work over the
commands of Napoleon) and his small fellow pigs have obtained two methods to control and
maintain power. First is establishing a police state to quell dissent. The second is the more
dangerous propaganda which was used by pigs. Propaganda means twisting the truth or things
and to promote your own thought and group. Napolean with the help of squealer turns the truth
to be self serving. For example: The abuse of language used by Napoleon regime in Animal
Farm is a danger which is alive even today. All over the world, political speech is purified in
such a way as to rob language of its "natural" meaning. Of course, this is not true everywhere
and not true all the time, but there is a distinct tendency to take ownership of language in a way
that can be called abusive and which leads to confusion and dishonesty while facilitating
potential corruption.  This isn't a conspiracy theory. It's a view of language wherein we see as in
the novel animal farm, that language can be used to hide as well as it can be used to explain. And
the other example of relevant animal farm now a days is communist countries.
Do you think it’s fair that those who are more educated or more skilled—like
the pigs in Animal Farm—have more influence in decision making? Consider
how decisions are made in your community, state, or in the nation.

No, I don’t think that the people who are more educated have more thinking power to make
decision. I think that every person has his own life and has his own opinion. And they should
allow to raise his problems or opinions wherever they want. It does not meant that the person
who have not the same skill as the foreign minister, it does not meant that their ideas are
meaningless. For example: In a school, I think that student should not be beaten or forced to give
the test. I did not say it because I hate giving them. Students have a right to say that whether they
want to give test or not. In other words, school is taking away some of our freedom. Just because
that person is more skilled then you, it does not meant they are smart, intelligent and honorable.

As in the novel, Snow Ball show to be that he had more ethical values. Napoleon was also smart
as Snowball. When a person sits into thrown and begin to control the nation of one country. He
does not think about the nation incomes and the only thing he looks for his own interests. This is
the thing that happened in the Animal Farm. Napoleon wanted to become the leader of the
animals, and he don’t look to the other animals. Just because the person is more power then the
others, does not mean that they are allowed to rule over us. As in the novel animal farm, the pigs
have more power for making decision. In order to satisfy all of the people your country, you
must ask other people what they want, and how to do that work effectively. In last, it is not good
that those person who are educated and have more power on decision making. If a person who
are not skilled as you and wants to make the decision, they are allowed to do so because this is
his right.

And in my country and nation, every person over the age of 18 are allowed to give votes to select
his ruler from union council elections to presidential election. After the election, Pakistan Army
makes most of the decision of my state that are political, defense and foreign policy. Almost in
my country Pakistan Army guides the government how to make the policy. The systems of
checks and balances or popular sovereignty might be one such element where individuals must
use their intelligence and knowledge to act for the interests of all.
