INTRODUCTION

A pressure relief valve is a safety device designed to protect

pressurized vessels, lines or systems during an overpressure event.

The proper sizing, selection, manufacturing, assembly, testing and

maintenance are all critical to obtain optimum protection.

This program, CROSBY-SIZE, is designed to provide maximum

service to Crosby's customers by presenting recommendations based
on our many years of experience in sizing, selecting, testing,
installing and operating safety, safety relief and pressure relief
devices. Use of this program allows an accurate determination of
such parameters as orifice size, maximum flow and noise, to name a
few.

The program is a powerful tool, yet easy to use. It's power comes
from many features and options such as quick and accurate
calculations, user selected units, selection of valve size and style,
valve data storage, and attractive printed reports and specification
sheets. Ease of use was a major objective in designing the program.
Program control via pop-up windows, function keys, extensive on-line
help facilities, easy to read formatted screens, immediate flagging of
errors, easy editing of displayed inputs, and other features combine
to make the program easy to understand and operate.

Crosby safety, safety relief and pressure relief valves are

manufactured in accordance with a controlled quality assurance
program which meets or exceeds the requirements of the ASME
Code quality control program requirements. With proper sizing and
selection, the user can be assured that Crosby products are of the
highest quality and technical standards in the world of pressure relief
technology.

API RP520 FIRE SIZING

SIZING FOR VAPORIZING LIQUIDS

The CROSBY-SIZE program has the option to calculate the amount

of vapor generated in a vessel under fire conditions in accordance
with the guidelines published in API Recommended Practice 520 -
Sizing, Selection and Installation of Pressure-relieving Devices In
Refineries - Part I - Sizing And Selection. The program will calculate
a mass flow due to fire exposure and then select a Crosby pressure
relief valve. This section applies to vessels containing both liquids
and gas.

The amount of heat absorbed by a tank exposed to an open fire is

markedly affected by the type of fuel feeding the fire, the degree to
which the tank is enveloped by the flames (a function of tank size
and shape), and fireproofing measures. The following equivalent
formulas are used to evaluate these conditions where there are
prompt fire-fighting efforts and drainage of flammable materials away
from the tank.

Q = 21,000 (F) (A 0.82)

Where adequate drainage and fire fighting equipment do not exist,

the following equation is used:

Q = 34,500 (F) (A 0.82)

To calculate the mass flow due to fire exposure, the following

equation is used:

Wf = Q / Hvap

Entering the program, click on the "API RP520 Fire Sizing" item on
the Main Menu and press [ENTER]. This will transfer you to the Fire
Sizing screen of the CROSBY-SIZE program.

The API RP520 Fire Sizing section first calculates the wetted area of
the tank that is exposed to the liquid. The program will prompt for the
type of service: Wetted (liquid) or Unwetted (gas):

Next the user will be asked if they wish to enter the exposed surface
area manually. If the user clicks on yes, then the wetted area of the
vessel can be entered.

Otherwise, the size and shape of the vessel will need to be

determined in order to calculate this area.

Click on "S" for sphere or "C" for cylinder. If you are unsure of the
tank type, and have a color graphics monitor, then you can press the
Show Sample Vessel button to see a pictorial representation of tank
types. This picture appears as follows.

If you select a sphere, the program will allow you to input tank
dimensions. If you choose cylinder two additional fields are enabled:

If the cylindrical tank is in a vertical, click on vertical; if in horizontal

position, click on horizontal. If horizontal is picked, the end-to-end
dimension is enabled.

The exact number of dimensions required depends on the type of

tank you have defined. In general, fill in all the dimension fields that
are enabled.

Specific note should be taken that when CROSBY-SIZE asks for the
length of the vessel, it is the overall length and not the weld-to-weld
length.

TERMINOLOGY
(ASME/ANSI PTC 25.3)

This section describes the common and standardized terminology

found in the CROSBY-SIZE program and User's Manual.

Backpressure: The static pressure existing at the outlet of a pressure

relief device due to pressure in the discharge system.

Built-up backpressure: Pressure existing at the outlet of a pressure

relief device occasioned by the flow through that particular device
into a discharge system.

Superimposed backpressure: The static pressure existing at the

outlet of a pressure relief device at the time the device is required to
operate. It is the result of pressure in the discharge system from
other sources.

Inlet size: The nominal pipe size of the inlet of a pressure relief valve,
unless otherwise designated.

Outlet size: The nominal pipe size of the outlet passage from a
pressure relief device, unless otherwise designated.

Overpressure: A pressure over the set pressure of a pressure relief

valve, usually expressed as a percentage of set pressure.

Pilot-operated pressure relief valve: A pressure relief valve in which

the major relieving device is combined with and is controlled by a
self-actuated auxiliary pressure relief valve (Pilot actuation).

Pressure relief valve: A spring-loaded pressure relief device which is
designed to open to relieve excess pressure and to reclose and
prevent the further flow of fluid after normal conditions have been
restored. It is characterized by rapid opening pop action or by
opening generally proportional to the increase in pressure over the
opening pressure. It may be used for either compressible or
incompressible fluids, depending on design, adjustment, or
application.

Rated relieving capacity: That portion of the measured relieving

capacity permitted by the applicable code or regulation to be used as
a basis for the application of a pressure relief device.

Relief valve: A pressure relief device actuated by inlet static pressure

having a gradual lift generally proportional to the increase in pressure
over opening pressure. It may be provided with an enclosed spring
housing suitable for closed discharge system application and is
primarily used for liquid service.

Relieving pressure: Set pressure plus overpressure.

Safety relief valve: A pressure relief valve characterized by rapid

opening or pop action, or by opening in proportion to the increase in
pressure over the opening pressure, depending on the application
and may be used for either liquid or compressible fluid.

Safety valve: A pressure relief valve actuated by inlet static pressure

and characterized by rapid opening or pop action. (It is normally used
for steam and air services.)

Set pressure: The value of increasing inlet static pressure at which a

pressure relief valve displays one of the operational characteristics
as defined under opening pressure, popping pressure, or start-to-leak
pressure.
