Nervous System Worksheet

The endocrine system produces hormones that are transported via bloodstream to target organs. When a dangerous situation is detected by the eyes, light is converted to nerve impulses by the retina which are conducted by sensory neurons in the optic nerve to the brain. This triggers the adrenal gland to release hormones which have short and long term effects like increased heart rate and metabolism to prepare the body for fighting or fleeing. Coordinating the nervous and endocrine systems provides both rapid and prolonged responses to danger through neural and hormonal pathways working together.

Endocrine System

(a) The endocrine system in mammals produces hormones.

Define the term hormone.

.is a chemical substance produced by the endocrine gland . it is transported in the bloodstream to
target organs where it exerts its effect. After they have performed their function they are
destroyed by the liver and are excreted by the kidneys

(b) The responses of the human body to danger are coordinated by the nervous and

endocrinesystems.

is detected by the eyes.
