CHAPTER 9: MEASURING VOLUME, Math 4, pp
Instruction: Copy and answer these in a long bond paper and fasten them in a long folder.
A. Define:
1) volume 2) solid figure 3) rectangular prism 4) vertex 5) edge
6) cube 7. Differentiate non-standard units from standard units
B. Enumeration.
8 – 12 Give 5 examples of non-standards units.
13-17 give 5 examples of standard units.
C. Visualize the volume of a solid using non-standard unit.
C.1. Get a medium-sized chocolate box and a medium-sized powdered milk carton. Which
do you think has a greater volume? How will you test which box has the greater volume?
Visualize.
D. Visualize the volume of a solid using standard units.
Draw cubes to visualize the given volume of the following solid figures. Use 1 cube = 1
cubic cm. (use a grid paper).
D.1. V= 12 cubic cm
D.2. V = 15 cubic cm
E. Finding the volume of a rectangular prism.
Look at the example at the right, Use the formula V=LxWxH, where Length are
rows, Width are columns and Height are layers. By counting, there are 24 cubes in all.
V=LxWxH
V=4 cm x 2 cm x 3 cm
V = 8 cm2 x 3 cm
V= 24 cubic centimeter or V= 24 cm3
So, use the formula to find the volume of these prisms:
E.1. E.2.
8 cm 12 cm
12 cm
5 cm 2 cm 12 cm
F. Word Problem
F.1. A toy box is in the shape of a rectangular prism. It is 35 cm long and 15 cm high. If
its width is 20 cm, what is its volume?
F.2. An aquarium measures 4 dm on each edge. How much space can it hold?
F.2.1. What is asked in the problem?
F.2.2. What facts are given?
F.2.3. What operation will be used?
F.2.4. How is the solution done?
F.2.5. What is the complete answer?
