second isotope in amu is :
a. 80.4 b. 87.0 c. 78.9 d. 81.0
5. An element (X) has two isotope that exist in nature in the following masses and relative abundances :
28
X (mass = 27.977 amu , abundance = 92.223% )
29
X (mass = 28.976 amu , abundance = 7.777% )
The atomic mass (in amu) of the element X is :
a. 28.976 b. 28.098 c. 28.054 d. 27.977
6. Mg has three stable isotopes . Given a sample of Mg with the following masses and percent abundances :
24Mg: 23.9850 amu , 58.42%

26Mg: 25.9826 amu , 26.36%
The average atomic mass in amu is
1. Ionic substance :
Composed of :
Example 1 : Determine the Cation and the anion in the ionic compound NaCl
Example 2: determine if it the compound is ionic or not , if it's ionic determine the anion and cation ?
1. Monatomic cations are named after the element if there is only one such ion.
Example: Al3+ is called aluminum ion ; Na+1 is called sodium ion.
2. If there is more than one monatomic cation of an element, Rule 1 is not sufficient.
The Stock system of nomenclature names the cations after the element, as in Rule 1, but follows this by a
Roman numeral in parentheses denoting the charge on the ion. Example: Fe2+ is called iron(II) ion and
Fe3+ is called iron(III) ion.
3. The names of the monatomic anions are obtained from a stem name of the element followed by the
suffix -ide.
Example: Br_ is called bromide ion, from the stem name brom- for bromine and the suffix -ide.

Clearly :
1. Cation (group IA , IIA , IIIA) Name of element in periodic table ()نسميهم نفس االسم كما بالجدول الدوري
2. Metals with high atomic number and the transition metals :
Name of element + (oxidation state in Roman Number)
Fe+2 : Iron (II) Cr+6 : Chromium (VI)
3. Monatomic anion :
stem name + ide
Cl : Chloride O: Oxide
4. Polyatomic anion :
NO2 − : Nitrite
1. You name the first element using the exact element name.
2. You name the second element by writing the stem name of the element with the suffix -ide as if the
element occurred as the anion).
3. You add a prefix, derived from the Greek, to each element name to denote the subscript of the element in
the formula.

Hydrates :
A hydrate is a compound that contains water molecules weakly bound in its crystals.
Hydrates are named from the anhydrous compound, followed by the word hydrate with a prefix to
indicate the number of water molecules per formula unit of the compound
Formula Name
1) CaCl2.6H2O Calcium Chloride hexa-hydrate
2) CuSO4.5H2O Cupper(II) Sulfate penta-hydrate
3) FeCl3. 6H2O Iron(III) Chloride hexa-hydrate
(g) : gas, (l) : liquid, (s) : solid, (aq) : aqueous (water) solution
If the reactants are heated to make the reaction go, you can indicate this by putting the symbol ∆
