PDF Generating System Curve in Excel For Pumping A Fluid

This document describes how to create system curves for a pump system using an Excel spreadsheet. It provides an example of designing a pump to transport a 50% methanol solution from Vessel A at 20 m height to Vessel B 1500 m away at 5 bar pressure. The document outlines calculating pipe lengths and fittings, generating system curves by matching pump performance curves, and examining water hammering effects and temperature rise. It notes the example uses assumptions and rules of thumb for educational purposes only and may contain errors.

How you can Step up The Following work will cover how you can create a
System Curves for a any system under study.
Performance Curves However it is based on literature cited from the Rules
Using excel Spreadsheet of Thumbs of Chemical Engineering by Stephan Hall
.The Spread Sheet is taken from the
http://www.chemengsoftware.com website and
manipulated for assumed Case Study .The following
work is just an exercise errors are Possible.

01 Problem Statement assumed

50 % methanol Solution is to transported from a Vessel A at height of 20 m
How Pumping from datum. The Vessel A is at 2 bar and 80 degc and total length from Pump
discharge line to Vessel B is 1500 meter .The Pump is to be design to give Pressure
Problem can solved
of 5 bar.
using Excel

02 System Specification:
The system have following fittings supposed

Matching System Curve • Total Elbows 90 deg = 2

generated with built in Pump • Isolation Valve = 2
Standard Performance Curves • Strainer =1
• Control valve = 1

For Educational Purpose only.

03 • General rules of Thumb are used to calculate Properties.
• Pipe Sizes based on nominal dia are selected arbitrarily.
Water Hammering • Pump System Curves can be generated in S.I and US units
and Control Valve • The Sheet can be used for control valve sizing but skipped.
Sizing . • Hammering is calculated Putting .
• Literature review can used to check theoretical aspects
• For Water Propane and Butane the system is made but can be
manipulated according to system with caution.
• Chances of Putting Wrong Specification are there in the sheet
• This documents is for educational purpose only may differ from
industrial practices .
• There are chances of error in excel sheet should be used with
caution.
