The document summarizes the teacher's strategies for running an effective classroom based on a video observation. The teacher used different types of questions, listened to students' responses, and built rapport by recognizing students, praising their answers, showing respect, and giving all students opportunities to participate. The author's experience building rapport also included recognizing students, listening, showing respect, and encouraging equal participation through group work. Overall, the teacher's strategies for questions, eliciting responses, and building rapport created a positive learning environment.

After doing a brief observation of the video in learning

activities 5.2, I can conclude that the teacher prepared the learning

very well so that the learning process at school runs very well too.

There are many things that can be observed in her class but

on this occasion I only focus on a few things, the first is the way

teacher asked questions and eliciting. From the three types of

questions, procedural question, convergent question and divergent

question, she used all of them. The video showed us when she used

the procedural questions such as Is anyone absent today? do you

understand? etc. She also used convergent questions such as when

you were a child did your parents tell you a story? How many

caracters are there in the story? What is the title of the story? etc. She

also used divergent question such as what story do you like most? It

can be seen that the teacher tended to ask convergent questions

than divergent questions.

She used Social Chat to find out to what extent the student's

knowledge in the material she would convey. And in my opinion her

strategy used was able to make her students very active in the class.

The students participation in her class is very well. All students were

seen actively in answering teachers questions. She also gives students

time in answering questions not so long as in the video she tells

students to complete a worksheet for several minutes about 2

minutes.
Next is from four strategies for building good rapport in the
classroom stated by Harmer (2007), she used all the strategies very
well. Firstly, she recognized her students very well. Why I said that
because when her student asked for an opportunity to answered her
question directly she invited her students by calling his/her name. and
I saw that she knew all her students name well. Then she also listen
to the students. I can see it from every answer given by her students
she always responded with praise such as excellent, very good, etc.
She also respect to her students. it can be seen from the teacher's
facial expression that always smiles and always responds to students'
answers very well. There was no expression of anger she showed
when she taught. Then the last is being even handed. She gave the
opportunity to all students in the class to speak not only the students
who always put their hands up but also all the students in the class. It
might be because the class was quite small and the students had very
good ability in English and a great motivation in learning.
Overall, the teacher's strategy in teaching process is very good,
from asking questions to students, eliciting and building rapport is
done very well. I can see the interaction between students and
teachers and also student and student in their group that are very
well interwoven in the video. In my opinion, the learning process from
preparation to closing the lesson is a very good example to be
applied in the classroom. I really enjoy watching the video ^_^
My experience in building rapport with my students, the first
is recognizing students. I often do this strategy. At the first meeting in
each class that I teach, I always precede it with an introduction, to
find out more about my students. I always want to know their
nicknames and also where they live so that during the learning
process the students and I will enjoy the class. And then I also always
listening to the students, such as when I asked question I always
listen to them when answering my questions. I will give a positive
response to their answers even if their answers are wrong. Next is
respecting students. Based on my explanation in my second strategy,
I always respond my students answer positively even if his/her answer
is wrong. I do that in order he/she is not shy and keep enthusiastic in
learning and will always try to give answers and also his/her ideas
and also always have motivation to learn. It means I respect to the
students whenever the students answer. The last strategy is being
even handed. Actually, this strategy did not work very well in some of
the classes that I taught but I always tried to invite students who
were less active to put hands up to stay actively involved in delivering
their answers. I usually form a group in which each group I put one
or two students who have a good ability in English so they can help
each other. and I say that all students must be prepared to deliver
answers from their groups because for group presentations I will
point randomly in each group of students who will be representatives
to display the answers from their groups. And I see this strategy is
quite effective to make students who are less active to be active in
speaking in class because they have prepared what they have to say
in front of their friends.
