Algebraic Expressions Notes Day-2

The document provides information on addition and subtraction of algebraic expressions. It includes examples of adding and subtracting terms with variables and coefficients. It also covers multiplying monomial algebraic expressions by explaining that you multiply the coefficients and use exponent rules to multiply the variables. Some examples provided are multiplying terms like x3 × x7 = x10 and (a3)5 × (a2b4)6 × (a4b3c4)5 = a19b74c45. The document concludes by instructing students to practice additional examples from their NCERT textbook.

DRILL EXERCISE
Q1. From the sum of 4 + 3𝑥 and 5 − 4𝑥 + 2𝑥 2 , subtract the sum of 3𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 and −𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 + 5
( Ans: 2𝑥 + 4)

Q2. What must be subtracted from 3𝑎2 − 6𝑎𝑏 − 3𝑏2 − 1 to get 4𝑎2 − 7𝑎𝑏 − 4𝑏2 + 1 ?
Solution: Let A = 3𝑎2 − 6𝑎𝑏 − 3𝑏2 − 1
B = 4𝑎2 − 7𝑎𝑏 − 4𝑏2 + 1
Let C be the expression that is to be subtracted from A to get B.
A–C=B
=> C=A–B
C= 3𝑎2 − 6𝑎𝑏 − 3𝑏2 − 1
4𝑎2 − 7𝑎𝑏 − 4𝑏2 + 1
(-) (+) (+) (-)

−𝑎2 + 𝑎𝑏 + 𝑏2 − 2

Hence, the required expression is −𝑎2 + 𝑎𝑏 + 𝑏2 − 2.

Q3. The perimeter of a triangle is 6𝑝2 − 4𝑝 + 9. If two of its sides are 𝑝2 − 2𝑝 + 1 and 3𝑝2 − 5𝑝 + 3, find
the third side.
Solution: perimeter of a triangle P = A + B + C ( sum of sides)
Let A = 𝑝2 − 2𝑝 + 1
Let B = 3𝑝2 − 5𝑝 + 3
Let the third side be C
=> C = P – ( A + B)
Step 1 : A + B = 𝑝2 − 2𝑝 + 1
3𝑝2 − 5𝑝 + 3
4𝑝2 − 7𝑝 + 4
Step 1 : P – (A + B) = 6𝑝2 − 4𝑝 + 9
4𝑝2 − 7𝑝 + 4
(-) (+) (-)

2𝑝2 + 3𝑝 + 5
Hence, the required expression is 2𝑝2 + 3𝑝 + 5.

MULTIPLICATION OF ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS:

MULTIPLICATION OF MONOMIALS:
• Multiply the constants together
• Multiply the variables using the laws of exponents 𝑎𝑚 × 𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎𝑚+𝑛 and (𝑎𝑚 )𝑛 = 𝑎𝑚𝑛

Monomial × Monomial
1 𝑥3 × 𝑥7 𝑥 3+7 = 𝑥 10

2 3𝑎2 × −4𝑎7 −12𝑎9

3 7 −9 7 9 21
(− 3 × − 10) 𝑥 3 𝑦 7 𝑧 5 = 10 𝑥 3 𝑦 7 𝑧 5
(− 𝑥 2 𝑦 3 𝑧 3 ) ( 𝑥𝑦 4 𝑧 2 )
3 10

4 5𝑥 2 𝑦 2 × 2𝑥 3 𝑦 2 × 3𝑥𝑦 30𝑥 6 𝑦 5

5 2 5 3 1 9 7 4
( 𝑎3 ) ( 𝑎2 𝑏4 ) ( 𝑎4 𝑏3 𝑐 4 ) 𝑎 𝑏 𝑐
5 6 5 5
