IV. PROCEDURE

TEACHERS ACTIVITY STUDENTS ACTIVITY

- MOTIVATION
Before we go to our main topic which is the Degree of
Comparison let us first recall the Adjectives

Nurulfa what is Adjective? Nurulfa: Adjective is a word that describes noun.

Very good! Adjectives describe to the noun or
modifies to the noun. In short it is a describing word.

Rasida can give an example of Adjectives? Rasida: Lovely

Lovely very good! What else? Ameer: beautiful

- PRESENTATION
Let me show you another examples of an adjective

Ola, Josh and Izzy can you please come in front? - Ola, josh and Izzy will come in front.
What have you observed? - Their height
Yes, their height right.?
Ola is tall
Josh is taller than Ola
Izzy is tallest among the three

Thank you! You may now take your seat.

Write the sentences on the board.

On the first sentence what adjective is being used?

Tall right? The word tall modifies to Ola. Is Ola’s
height being compared to anyone? No.
Now look at the second sentence is there any
comparison made? And who are being compared?
Ola and Josh.
How about the 3rd sentence Izzy is the tallest among
the three. How many persons are involved? More LISTEN
than 2 persons are being involved or compared.

From the word tall, taller and tallest that means the
adjective has a degree of comparison.

What do mean by degree of comparison? You’re

going to use an adjective to not just one person but
to 2 or more persons.
C.ABSTRACTION

Positive Degree
First degree of comparison is the positive. When we
say positive we describe only one person. just like what
I have shown to you a while ago that Ola is tall. The
word tall is positive.

Comparative
Followed by comparative when we say comparative
from the word compare you are now going to compare
2 persons like Josh and Ola.

Superlative
The last one is superlative. When we say superlative it
talks about more than 2 persons. You’re not just
talking about 1 person but also including 2 or more
persons.

There are rules also in comparing the adjectives first is

1. When one syllable adjective and some two
syllables adjective are compared by adding
“ER” in the comparative and “EST” in the
superlative.
Ex: long, longer longest
Sweet, sweeter, sweetest
From the word long. So, what is the comparative word ------ Longer
of long?
Longer very good!
How about in the superlative It would be? Longest. ------ longest

How about the word sweet? In the comparative? ----- sweeter

And in the superlative is? ----- sweetest
Very good!
Another rule is:
2. When an adjective of one syllable ends in “E”
only “R” and “ST” are added.
Ex: Brave, braver, bravest
Wise, wiser, wisest

From the word brave, in the comparative it would --- braver

be? And the superlative it would be? ----bravest
Now everybody read. ---- brave , braver, bravest

How about this word wise. ---wiser

Wiser from comparative right? How about the
superlative? ---wisest

Now everybody read. --- wise, wiser, wisest

The 3rd rule is when the adjectives ends in “Y” change

“Y” to “I” and add “ER” and “EST”
Ex: funny , funnier , funniest
Happy, happier ,happiest

What is the comparative word of funny? --- funnier

How about superlative? ----funniest

Another example, how about the word happy? In the

comparative? And in superlative? --- happier
Now everybody read. ----happiest
---- happy , happier, happiest

Another rule is when adjectives ends in consonant

that follows a vowel you doubled the last consonant
and add “ER” and “EST”
Ex: thin, thinner , thinnest
Fat, fatter, fattest

What do you mean by consonant? Or consonant

letter are? Yes, b,c,d so on and so forth --- b,c,d

Ex: Thin what would be the comparative? It should

be?
Thinner. So we doubled the last consonant letter. The --thinner
last consonant letter is? N so we doubled it and add
er and that would be the comparative and superlative
is?
--thinnest
Another example, from the word fat? In the --- fatter
comparative is? Fatter. And the superlative is? fattest --- fattest

And the last rule of comparing adjectives is this one:

When adjectives of more than one syllable are
compared by using modifiers more and most or less
and least.

When we say syllables. Word is dived when it is

pronounced for example thin that is one syllable.
Comparative, Com-pa-ra-tive so there are 4 syllables.

Again more and most. More if it is comparative and

most if it is superlative. Less if it is comparative and
least if it is superlative.

Example: Beautiful

What is the comparative word of beautiful?

More beautiful or less beautiful s--- more beautiful
The superlative word is?
Most beautiful or least beautiful ----Most beautiful
