Class 9 Mathematics Gist & Assignment 9

This document contains summaries of two lessons from a Class IX mathematics textbook: 1) Factorization of algebraic expressions, including identities for factorizing the sum and difference of cubes and formulas for factorizing cubes of binomial expressions. 2) Definitions and concepts relating to polynomials, including the definition of a polynomial, degree of a polynomial, classification of polynomials based on degree, and the concepts of zero polynomial and zeros of a polynomial. Students are assigned practice questions testing their understanding of factorizing algebraic expressions and polynomials, as well as multiple choice questions, to be submitted through an online platform by a specified due date.

GIST OF THE LESSON

FACTORIZATION OF ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS (PART II)
1. Factorization of algebraic expressions expressible as the sum or difference of two
cubes using the following identities :
(i) 𝑎3 + 𝑏3 = (𝑎 + 𝑏)(𝑎2 − 𝑎𝑏 + 𝑏 2 )
(ii) 𝑎3 + 𝑏3 = (𝑎 + 𝑏)(𝑎2 − 𝑎𝑏 + 𝑏 2 )
2. Factorization of algebraic expressions by using the formulae for the cubes of
binomials :
(i) (𝑎 + 𝑏)3 = 𝑎3 + 𝑏3 + 3𝑎𝑏(𝑎 + 𝑏)
(ii) (𝑎 − 𝑏)3 = 𝑎3 − 𝑏3 − 3𝑎𝑏(𝑎 − 𝑏)
3. Factorization of algebraic expressions of the form 𝑎3 + 𝑏3 + 𝑐 3 − 3𝑎𝑏𝑐 as 𝑎3 +
𝑏3 + 𝑐 3 − 3𝑎𝑏𝑐 = (𝑎 + 𝑏 + 𝑐 )(𝑎2 + 𝑏2 + 𝑐 2 − 𝑎𝑏 − 𝑏𝑐 − 𝑐𝑎)
4. Factorization of the sum of the cubes of three terms when the sum of the terms is
zero, using the following identity:
𝑎3 + 𝑏3 + 𝑐 3 = 3𝑎𝑏𝑐, as 𝑎 + 𝑏 + 𝑐 = 0
5. Relevant examples and class work.

FACTORIZATION OF POLYNOMIALS (PART I)

1. Definition of polynomial with real coefficients and real variable.

2. Coefficients of the terms in a polynomial.
3. Classification of polynomials o the basis of the number of terms : monomial,
binomial, trinomial etc.
4. Degree of a polynomial.
5. Classification of the polynomials on the basis of the degree : constant polynomial,
linear polynomial, quadratic polynomial, cubic polynomial, biquadratic polynomial
etc.
6. Concept of zero polynomial.
7. Value of a polynomial.
8. ZERO of a polynomial and its connection with the root of the corresponding
polynomial equation.
9. Integer Root Theorem.
10. Rational Root theorem.
11. Relevant examples and class work.
