With Reference To DIN 7990
DIN 7990 with its both versions 1999 & 2008 we can come with the following:
From the above table the DIN 7990 bolt is not suitable to be used with flat washer with min thk
<= 4mm for 1999 version and thk <= 5mm for 2008 version
As always we will find some cases with the nut runs out of threads before it can be tightened,
because is the connection width near the min value of grip length “lk” (table 4 in 2008 version
and table 3 in 1999 version) and the available bolts has lg near its max length (table 1 in both
versions)
Proof:
Suppose the connection total width (grip) is 41.5 mm (excluding the flat washer)
As per standard we should use M16x70 mm bolt where the grip length between (40.5-45.5)
After adding the ASTM F436M washer the total connection width is 41.5+3.15 = 44.65 mm
If the supplied bolt with actual grip length (lg) between (44.65 & 45.5) the nut will run out of
threads before it can be tightened
= 1.85/5
= 37% of the connections may have the nut runs out of threads before it can be tightened
Recommendation:
Note: using the tall threaded portion length as per 2008 version will temporarily solve some of
our problems but will not solve all of them
