With Reference To DIN 7990

The document summarizes the key dimensions for fasteners according to the DIN 7990 standard from 1999 and 2008 versions. It notes that bolts specified in the standard are not suitable to be used with flat washers less than 4mm thick for the 1999 version or 5mm thick for the 2008 version. An example is provided showing that if the connection width is near the minimum grip length and the bolt length is near its maximum, the nut may not be able to be fully tightened before running out of threads. It recommends following the standard and using an 8mm thick flat washer to avoid this issue.

With reference our discussion about the delivered fasteners dimensions and after reviewing the

DIN 7990 with its both versions 1999 & 2008 we can come with the following:

Bolt Δ Grip Length (Δ lk mm)

dia DIN 7990-1999 DIN 7990-2008
M16 4 5
M20 4 5

From the above table the DIN 7990 bolt is not suitable to be used with flat washer with min thk
<= 4mm for 1999 version and thk <= 5mm for 2008 version

As always we will find some cases with the nut runs out of threads before it can be tightened,
because is the connection width near the min value of grip length “lk” (table 4 in 2008 version
and table 3 in 1999 version) and the available bolts has lg near its max length (table 1 in both
versions)

Proof:

Using DIN 7990-2008 and M16 bolt

Suppose the connection total width (grip) is 41.5 mm (excluding the flat washer)

As per standard we should use M16x70 mm bolt where the grip length between (40.5-45.5)

After adding the ASTM F436M washer the total connection width is 41.5+3.15 = 44.65 mm

If the supplied bolt with actual grip length (lg) between (44.65 & 45.5) the nut will run out of
threads before it can be tightened

Ie: (45.5-(40. 5+3.15))/(45.5-40.5)

= 1.85/5

= 37% of the connections may have the nut runs out of threads before it can be tightened

Recommendation:

Follow the standard recommendation of using 8mm flat washer thickness

Note: using the tall threaded portion length as per 2008 version will temporarily solve some of
our problems but will not solve all of them
