Mechanics of Fluids Problem Set On Total Hydrostatic Force, Dams Ad Buoyancy Identification: Due Date: July 7, 2020

This document contains a mechanics of fluids problem set involving total hydrostatic force, dams, and buoyancy. It includes 4 parts with multiple problems in each part asking about hydrostatic pressure, forces on dams, submerged objects, and floating cylinders. The problems require calculating things like resultant pressures, minimum base widths, shearing stresses, horizontal and vertical force components, and tensions in cords.

Problem Set on Total hydrostatic force, Dams ad buoyancy

IDENTIFICATION:
Due Date: July 7, 2020

1. Sometimes called hollow dams because it does not form a solid wall stretching across a river
valley. ___________________________
2. The force that exists underneath a dam due to seepage. ____________________________
3. Give one purpose of a dam. _____________________________

PROBLEM SOLVING: (PART I)

Due date: July 7, 2020

1. A masonry dam of trapezoidal cross section, with one face vertical has a thickness of 2 ft and
10 ft at the bottom. It is 22 ft high and has a horizontal base. The inclined face is subjeted to
water pressure. The water standing to depth of 15 ft above the base. The weight of the
masonry is 150 lb per cu.ft. If there is no hydrostatic uplift,
a. Where will the resultant pressure intersect the base? ____________________________
b. What is the maximum pressure? ____________________________

2. A dam shown in figure has water 2.7 m high on the vertical upstream side. If unit weight of
concrete is 23.5 kN/cu.m, determine

w.s
0.6 m 0.5 m

2.7 m

2.1 m

a. Minimum width of the base that the resultant falls within the middle thirds. Neglect
hyrostatic uplift. __________________________
b. Minimum coefficient of friction to prevent sliding. __________________________
c. Shearing stress at the depth of 0.9 m above the hoizontal base. __________________________
PROBLEM SOLVING:( Part II )
Due date: July 9, 2020

1. A rectangular gate is 4 m x 4 m set on a 45 degree plane with respect to water surface. The
centroid of the gate is located 10 m belowwater surface. The gate is to hinged in such a
manner that there will be no moment rotating the gate under the given water depth. Locate
the hinge shown in figure from the center of gravity. __________________________

2. The cylinder in the figure rest on an inclined plane and is submerged in liquid up to its top as
shown. Use unit weght of water 9.79 kN/cu.m.
a. Determine the horizontal component of the force per uni width exerted by the water on
the cylinder. ____________________________
b. Determine the vertical component of the force per uni width exerted by the water on the
cylinder. ____________________________
c. Determine the resultant thrust of the force per unit width exerte by the water on the
cylinder. ____________________________

3. Calculate the resultant force on triangular window ABC shown in figure and locate its center
of pressure from the bottom. ____________________________
PROBLEM 3: (Part III)
Due date: July 11, 2020
1. A wooden storage vat full of liquid with specific gravity of o.75 is in the form of frustum of a
cone, 1.5 m in diameter at the top, 3 m at the bottom, and 2 m high. It is provided with steel
hoops, one at the top and one at the bottom. Determine:
a. The hydrostatic force acting on the side of the container.______________________________
b. How high is the said force above the bottom. ___________________________

2. A spherical balloon 20 ft in diameter is filled with gas weighing 0.035 lb per cu.ft. In standard
air weighing 0.0765 lb per cu.ft., what is the maximum load, including its own weight, that the
balloon can lift? ______________________________

3. A 2 m diameter cylinder containing oil of s.g. = 0.80 is immerged in water in a tall metal
cylinder having a diameter of 8 m. Before immersion, the water was 4 m deep. If the 2-m
diameter cotainer tank weighs 15 kN, what should contained be the height of oil in the
floating cylinder so that the bottom of the cylinder floats 1.5 m from the bottom?
___________________________________

4. Figure shows a metal part hanging by a thin cord from a floating wood block. The wood
block has a specific gravity of 0.30 and dimension of 50 x 50 x 10 mm. The metal part has a
volume of 6600 cu.mm. Determine:
a. The bouyant force acting on the wood block in Newton. ___________________________
b. The tension in the cord in Newton. ___________________________
c. The mass of the metal part in gram. __________________________
