EXHAUST SYSTEM:
Emission control on cars and trucks have
one purpose i.e. to reduce amount of
pollutants and environmentally
damaging substances released by
vehicles. The consequences of pollutants
are dangerous. The air we breathe and
water we drink may become
contaminated with chemicals that
adversely affect our health.
All these components are harmful in their own way and thus are subject
to government scrutiny.
Emission Standards
There are laws on emission standards which limit each pollutant in the
exhaust gas emitted by the automobile engines.
The European emission standards are called Euro norms. In India Euro I
emission norms were implemented in New Delhi from June 1999 and Euro II
norms have taken effect from April 2000 throughout India. All the
manufacturers need to comply with these regulations.

Tail Pipe
EGR
Exhaust Manifold
Exhaust manifold is a tube for
carrying the burnt gases away from
the engine cylinders.

E.G.R System
(Exhaust Gas Recirculation)
This is an emissions control
technology whereby the oxides of
nitrogen will be reduced to
minimum in the tail pipe.
The EGR valve is vacuum operated and is actuated by ECU through a vacuum
modulator. The ECU actuates the vacuum modulator as per the signals received
from various sensors such as engine speed sensor, TPS and ECT sensor.
An overheated engine
Lean air/fuel mixtures
Vacuum leaks
Over advanced ignition timing
Defective EGR system
