Organizational Behavior
It is generally described as being made up the characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings, and
behaviors that make a person unique. In simple words, personality refers to a set of traits
possessed by an individual that makes him/her distinct from others. There are various theories of
personality.
Let’s start with an example of Bill Gates. There are a number of personality traits that helped Bill
Gates become one of the most successful entrepreneurs till date. Entrepreneurs can learn a lot
from him. Many entrepreneurs from all over the world follow several of Gates’ principles and
personality traits. One of the most important personality traits of Bill Gates is his creativity,
which is born from his imagination. Another important aspect of his personality is adaptability.
This trait led him to emphasis innovation.
Average: The most common type are people who are high in neuroticism and extraversion while
lower in openness.
Reserved: People in this type are not open or neurotic but they are emotionally stable. They tend
to be introverted, agreeable and conscientious.
Role-models: These people are natural leaders with low levels of neuroticism and high levels of
agreeableness, extraversion, openness and conscientiousness. They listen to new ideas and are
reliable.
Self-centered: While these people score high in extraversion, they rank below average openness,
agreeableness and conscientiousness.
2. Introduction to Attitude
Attitude is how one behaves towards somebody or something. It is one’s personal view, opinion
or judgment. It also describes one’s general emotional approach toward a person or situation.
Person’s attitude determines the state of world he/she lives in. It is the foundation for every
success and every failure one has had and will have. It drives virtually every decision one makes
and how one lives each day of life. Attitude will shape a person’s career. A great attitude will
propel him forward, while a poor attitude will get him fired.
It has been found that people who have a good attitude remain healthier than their counterparts.
This is because an optimistic attitude helps in preventing sadness, depression, anger, stress and
anxiety and this in turn helps in preventing various medical problems.
Attitudes often help people to adjust to their work environment. Well treated employees tend to
develop a positive attitude towards their job; management and the organization in general while
ill-treated organizational members develop a negative attitude. In other words, attitudes help
employees adjust to their environment and form a basis for future behaviour.
Attitudes help people to retain their dignity and self- image. When a young faculty member who
is full of fresh ideas and enthusiasm, joins the organization, the older members might feel
somewhat threatened by him. But they tend to disapprove his creative ideas as ‘crazy’ and
‘impractical’ and dismiss him altogether.
3. Introduction to Leadership
Leadership refers to the quality of leading people. Probably, it is one of the most important
aspects of life. Without good Leadership, no organization or group can succeed. Effective
Leadership requires certain important characteristics.
A simple definition is that leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act toward
achieving a common goal. In a business setting, this can mean directing workers and colleagues
with a strategy to meet the company's needs. It is a process by which a person influences other to
accomplish an objective and directs the organization to make it cohesive and coherent. It is the
ability to build confidence and network among people. It inspires confidence and support among
group members to achieve the organizational goals.
Organizations need strong leadership for optimum effectiveness. A leader must lead
himself/herself, only then he/she can lead others. He/she must be committed on personal and
professional front, and must be responsible and also be a role model for others and set an
example for them.
A leader must boost up the morale of the employees, motivate them well so that they are
committed to the organization and be well acquainted with them, have concern for them as well
as encourage them to take initiatives. This will result in more efficient and effective employees
and ensure organizational success. He/she must work as a team, support the team and respect
them and should not hurt any employee. A true leader should not be too bossy and should not
consider own self as the supreme authority. They should realize that they are the part of the
organization as a whole.
Organizational leadership involves all the processes and possible results that lead to development
and achievement of organizational goals. It includes employees’ involvement, genuineness,
effective listening and strategic communication.
4. Personality and attitude in leadership
Personality is one of the most important quality in the leadership. It helps to create a good
impact of a manager or leader among his employees. The importance of personality and how it
complements a leader, varies by role and industry. For managers and business leaders, having the
ability to motivate and encourage their colleagues while also understanding their shortcomings,
is critical to an organization's success.
For leaders, having the ability to communicate effectively with staff and remain flexible toward
change is imperative to driving an organization forward. In this instance, a leader's ability to
build and sustain relationships with colleagues is integral to the organization's success.
Personality dictates how a leader is able to build and sustain such relationships, and is thus an
important element for leadership.
Attitude can be defined as a positive or negative evaluation of people, objects, event, activities,
ideas, or just about anything in surrounding environment. When a manager treats his/her
employees well, they are likely to develop a positive attitude towards management and
organization. On the other hand, when the manager or leader shouts out all the time, becomes
aggressive and has nature of biasness on his/her employees, the attitude approach become
negative. This may lead to spoil the environment of the organization and affect the production
and quality of product.
Attitude provides a sort of framework to the leader and helps to solve the problem of employees.
Getting success at anything, leader need to have right mindset. Their body language is a result of
their mental attitude. When a leader comes in that mood, will reflect a message that everyone
understands consciously or unconsciously. A person’s attitude is the first thing that another
person will pick up on in one-to-one communication. Leaders can learn and master powerful
strategies for keeping themselves thinking positively and creatively. This will help them in
increasing positive attitude. A leader with positive attitude can create a healthy atmosphere in the
organization.
