1. PURPOSE: To establish a system for safe working at height

2. SCOPE: This procedure is applicable to all departments for all types of working
above height of 1.8 Mtrs

3. SAFETY, HEALTH & ENVIRONMENT CONSIDERATION

3.1 Job specific safety standards applicable


HIRA / JSA, LOTO

3.2 Hazards:

Fall from height, Fatality

3.3 PPE Requirements:

Hand gloves, Safety goggles, Full body Harness


Safety Helmet, Safety Shoes & Reflective Jacket.

4. RESPONSIBILITY

Section Heads / Safety Officer / Site Engineer/ Site Supervisor is responsible for
ensuring the effectiveness of system for Working at height.

5. Work Instructions : -

5.1 Examples of working at height tasks where falls could occur include:

- Working on roofs;
- Cleaning windows;
- Air-conditioning maintenance;
- Erecting signs and displays;
- Ladder work;
- Working near holes, pits and shafts; and
- Working on fragile, slippery or sloping surfaces.

5.2 First of all, it is to be ensured that workers should be worn safety belt, safety helmet,
safety shoes & safety hand gloves when and where ever necessary.

5.3 If necessary, take electrical shut down of the equipment.

5.4 Make solid and fixed support for climbing at height such as ladder, stool and
scaffoldings.

5.5 Do not move the ladder when the person is still at the top of ladder.

5.6 Always provide sufficient numbers of helpers to hold and shift ladder or stool.

5.7 Wear safety belt and tie it with fixed support at the level above working place.

5.8 Additional Do’s and don’ts of working at height


Do’s….
 As much work as possible from the ground
 Avoid un-favorable climate conditions
 Ensure workers can get safely to and from where they work at height
 Ensure equipment is suitable, stable and strong enough for the job,
maintained and checked regularly
 Take precautions when working on or near fragile surfaces
 Provide protection from falling objects
 Consider emergency evacuation and rescue procedures

Don’t…
 Overload ladders – consider the equipment or materials workers are carrying
before working at height. Check the pictogram or label on the ladder for
information
 Overreach on ladders or stepladders
 Rest a ladder against weak upper surfaces, eg glazing or plastic gutters
 Use ladders or stepladders for strenuous or heavy tasks, only use them for
light work of short duration (a maximum of 30 minutes at a time)
 Let anyone who is not competent (who doesn’t have the skills, knowledge
and experience to do the job) work at height
