Peer Appraisal
Peer Appraisal
Peer appraisal refers to a student’s performance assessment provided by the student’s colleagues
in the immediate working environment who have observed the student’s classroom performance
and are able to give constructive feedback. Peer Appraisal is an assessment which allows
students to assess each other's performance. It can be extremely valuable in helping students to
learn from each other by listening, analyzing and problem solving. It gives students the
opportunity to encounter diversity in different ways, critique and judge and ultimately, students
learn how to be responsible for their own learning.
Peer appraisal is about revision and improvement. It enables students to independently assess
their own and other students’ progress with confidence rather than always relying on teacher
judgment. When student’s self and peer assess, they are actively involved in the learning process
and their independence and motivation is improved. Students who can look at their work, and
judge the degree by which it reflects explicitly stated goals or criteria, can assess the quality of
their work and revise it accordingly. Peer appraisal provides a structured learning process for
students to critique and provide feedback to each other on their work. It helps students develop
lifelong skills in assessing and providing feedback to others, and also equips them with skills to
self-assess and improve their own work.
