Extended Reached Drilling

Extended reach drilling (ERD) involves wells with high deviation ratios, often greater than 3. ERD wells present significant drilling challenges including wellbore stability, friction, and hole cleaning. Successful ERD requires detailed planning including rock mechanics studies, borehole trajectory design, drilling load estimates, and rig and equipment selection capable of high torque and pumping power. Rotary steerable systems provide improved 3D directional control while drilling but require high maintenance in remote areas. Pilot holes are used to evaluate reservoir placement and calibrate drilling parameters for geosteering the final well.

deviation ratio < 2 === > deviated wells

deviation ratio = 2 to 3 === > ERD
deviation ratio > 3 === > severe ERD (nowadays) > 6 !

Average angles form surface to TVD : 70O or higher

COMPLEX WELLS

“ Complex “ wells : are similar to ERD wells but they involve multiple-target
trajectories with substantial azimuthally steering ;

Complex wells may involve substantial additional footage without necessarily

increase departure.

Pilot hole for optimum well placement

A pilot hole : to evaluate reservoir thickness, placement of the well’s heel position, calibrate FEWD
parameters

Geosteering = to obtain an optimal placement of drain in the reservoir;

=== > MWD ( directional sensors ) + LWD with resistiviti-gama ray

( + RSS tools to keep rotating the bit all the time )

DRILLING AN ERD WELL

“Geometric drilling section”

refers to drilling along a fixed,
predermined trajectory

to navigating to borehole using

ERD AND DRILLING CHALLENGES

For the successful planning and execution the following tasks must be done:
• Collect data from nearly wells and published ERD literature
• Work on wellbore stability : perform rock mechanics studies to estimate
mud weight windows,
• Design of wells bore profile,
• Estimate to torque and drag to evaluate drilling loads and next to
compare with execution; reduce friction and torque which restrict the
horizontal length of the drain,
• Work on hydraulics for hole cleaning, ECD
• Mud program
• Design drillstring: Minimize drillpipe pressure loss; select BHA adequate
rotary-steerable / directional drilling equipment for geostreering
purposes,
• Define, select and check rig and equipment capabilities : top drive
system, lifting system ( special casing running system )

ERD Tools

Rotary steerable tools / systems for directional drilling

• In recent years (>1990s) significant advances have been made
with regard to adjustable stabilizers.
They are now “hydraulically-instructed”-adjustable-diameter
stabilizer with many settings over a wide size range.
• The new tools provide greater 3D-directional control while
maximizing rotary –mode drlling

Reminder : two steering actuation processes

“push the bit” system and “point the bit” system

Main Advantages
• being able to rotate continuously the drillstring
• being able to active the stab-diameter down-hole via telemetry
• rotation + steering use in conjunction with MWD+LWD
Main disadvantages
• durability and maintenance in remote areas,
• very high rental costs
...rig sizing

• Maximum required power is usually from back reaming at the end of

12 ¼ “ section (>5500 kW)
• Top drive : continuous top drive torque (approx. 45.000 ft. lbs) and
intermittent maximum torque rating will be selected
• Handling of tubulars : less time manipulating tubulars = less time for
bore hole instability...
• As with mud pumps, consideration should be given to availability of a
spare generator.
• Heavy duty rig, with

• 6 motor : 5450 kW
• 3 pumps 12P160
• Mud Plant 1400 m3
• Top Drive TDS4 : 47.000 ft.lbs
• High Torque Drill Pipe
5.000 m of 6 5/8” & 5.000 m of 5
½”
• Racking Capacity
7.800 m of 12 ¼” & 8.300 m in 8
½”
Important note

ERD wells needs strong preliminary studies; wells could be very

expensive and disappointing in case of failure (harming the reaimining
of the project,...)
Therefore be sure to have the right drillling project (a valuable
application), before embarking to these challenging wells.
