COMPOUND AND COMPLEX SENTENCES SHOWING PROBLEM & SOLUTION

Compound sentence – are made up of two simple sentences or independent clauses jined by
coordinating conjunctions.With the appropriate transition words or phrases, compound sentence
can be used to show problem-solution relationship.
Example: Ellah is hungry so she eats a lot).
Problem Solution

Complex sentence is made up of a main (independent) clause and one or more subordinate
(dependent )clauses whose ideas are related. These ideas are connected by transition words. It
can be used to show problem-solution relationship with the help of transition words such as so
that, because, since, and in order to.

Example:
Problem: The spread of corona virus be avoided.
Solution: People are advised to stay home.
Complex sentence: People are advised to stay home so that the spread of corona virus
can be avoided.

A. Directions: Construct a compound sentence from the given pair of problem and
solution ideas.
Example: Problem: Ellah is hungry.
Solution: She eats a lot.
Compound sentence : Ellah is hungry so she eats a lot.
