CE231 Course Syllabus
CE231 Course Syllabus
Prerequisites:
1. Basic knowledge in soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering
2. Basic knowledge in concrete design
3. Familiar with the latest NSCP and ACI-318-08
4. Familiar with FEM
Course Objectives:
1. Provide the student with a basic understanding of the essentials steps involved in a geotechnical
site investigation.
2. Introduce to the students the principal types of foundations and the factors governing the
choice of the most suitable type of foundation for a given situation.
3. Familiarize the student with the procedures used for: (a) bearing capacity estimation (b)
settlement analysis in the design of shallow foundation (c) structural design of shallow
foundation.
4. Familiarize the student with the procedures used for (a) end bearing capacity and (b) skin
friction estimation in the design of deep foundations (c) settlement analysis in the design of
deep foundation (d) structural design of deep foundation.
5. Familiarize the student with the procedures of designing excavations (i.e. embedded retaining
walls.
6. Provide the student with an opportunity to apply geotechnical engineering principles to an
actual foundation design problems.
7. Provide the students with the basic methodologies in basement constructions.
