Digital Image Processing (EEE F435)
Comprehensive Examination, Semester-II (2018-19)
Part-A (Closed-book)[IC:Ashish Chittora]

Duration: 120 Minutes Maximum Marks: 50

Q.1. Consider a 5x5 image (Fig.-1). Apply following filters on the central 3X3 region of the image to
remove the noise present in the image and state which filter (or filters) is suitable for noise removal. [6]

(a) Max-filter (b) Median filter (c) Averaging filter

Q. 2. (a) What is gamma-correction. Which type of discrepancy in images can be corrected by it? [5]

(b) Explain homomorphic filtering. In which condition homomorphic filtering is useful on images? [5]

Q.3. During acquisition an image undergoes uniform linear motion of B units in the vertical direction for
a time T1 and then A units in horizontal direction for time T2. If the time taken by the image to change
directions is negligible, and shutter opening and closing times are also negligible. Determine the
expression for the blurring function H(u,v). [6]

Q.4. Using the image (Fig.-2), explain the Splitting and Merging technique for image segmentation. [8]

Q. 5. Find the shape number and order of the shape number for the boundary (Fig.-3). [6]

Figure-1 Figure-2 Figure-3

Q.6. (a) Given the following 4-bit image. Transform it to a

3-bit image by removing the least significant bit-plane.
Construct a Huffman code on the result and determine the
average number of bits/pixel used by the code. [6]

(b) Now apply Huffman coding to the original image and

determine the average number of bits/pixel used by the
code.[5]

(c) Which of the two codes gives the best rate of

compression? [3]

Comprehensive Examination, Semester-II (2018-19)
Part-B (Open-book) [IC:Ashish Chittora]
Duration: 60 Minutes Maximum Marks: 30

Q.1. Consider the following feature vector representing a set of four observations (samples) of three
features of an object.

(a) Calculate the covariance matrix for feature vectors x. [4]

(b) Find the transformation from x to y using Hotelling Transform relation. Write
the transformation matrix A. [6]

(c) Calculate the covariance matrix for y. [4]

Q.2. For the following square shape boundary:

(a) Find the Fourier descriptors. [4]

(b) Verify the FD’s rotation property if the square shape is rotated by angle 450 anticlockwise. [4]

Q.3. Find the morphological operations and structuring elements that produced each of the results shown
in images (a) to (d). Show the origin of each structuring element clearly. The dashed line shows the
boundary of the original set and is included only for reference. In (c) and (d), corners are rounded. [8]
