EC05214ANotes 34 PDF

The document discusses the general solution of the uniform plane wave equation in free space. It states that the general solution is given by E = f1(x - v0t) + f2(x + v0t), where f1 and f2 are functions, v0 is the velocity of propagation, and x is the direction of propagation. It explains that f1 represents a forward wave and f2 a reflected wave, but as this considers free space there is no reflector so the solution is just E = f1(x - v0t), representing a wave moving in the x direction.

General solution of uniform plane wave equation
The wave equation in free space is
∇ 2 E = µ 0 ∈0 E&&
Applying the conditions of uniform plane wave equation, the above equation
becomes
∂2E
∇2 E = [as E ≠ f ( y ), E ≠ f (z )]
∂x 2

∂2E ∂2Ey
= µ 0 ∈0 (1.3)
∂x 2 ∂t 2
Equating the respective components on either side and as Ex=0, we have
∂2Ey ∂2Ey
= µ 0 ∈0
∂x 2 ∂t 2
∂ 2 Ez ∂ 2 Ez
= µ 0 ∈0
∂x 2 ∂t 2
Equation (1.3) has a general solution given by
E = f1 ( x − υ 0 t ) + f 2 ( x + υ 0 t )

where f1 and f 2 are functions of ( x − υ0t ) and ( x + υ 0 t ) respectively.

1
υ0 = = velocity of propagation
µ 0 ∈0
x is the direction of propagation of the wave.
f1 ( x − υ0t ) represents a forward wave and

f 2 ( x + υ 0t ) represents a reflected wave.

This reflected wave is present when there is a conductor which acts as a reflector.
Otherwise, it is absent. As we are considering free space propagation, E will be
f1 ( x − υ0t ) only, that is,

E = f1 ( x − υ 0 t )

This is the solution of uniform plane wave equation in free space. The behaviour
is represented typically in Fig. 1.2.
