Brake Performance Comparison: Title: Key Question

The document compares the braking performance of Cummins' 2002 Enforcer Full Production engines (ISX 1, ISX 2, and ISX 3) to their 1999 APEX predecessors. A graph shows the raw retarding power in horsepower for each engine model at various engine speeds. The 2002 Enforcer engines have significantly better braking performance across all speed ranges compared to the 1999 models, with as much as a 35% improvement at 1700 RPM for the ISX 1. The addition of a variable geometry turbo allowed for major gains in retarding power for the 2002 Enforcer engines over the earlier 1999 models.

Title: Enforcer Full Production "level six" Braking Performance for ISX 1, ISX 2, and ISX 3
Key Question: What are the three Enforcer '02 Full Production brake performance curves, and how
do they compare to their '99 APEX predecessors?

'99 ISX 2 (six cyl) '99 ISX 1 (six cyl)

Results:
- Enf '02 ISX 1 clearly has the best braking performance. (High compression ratio)
- Enf '02 ISX 2 / ISX 3 have very comparable performance curves at all but the very highest engine speeds.
- Enf '02 clearly is a major improvement over the '99 APEX.
- The largest single point of improvement is ISX 1 @ 1700 RPM, where the improvement is 126 Hp (over 35%) !!!!!!!!!!!
- Total retarding power can be calculated by adding the estimated Enf '02 Fan power to the values tabulated below.
Engine Speed Measured Engine/Brake Retarding Power [Hp] Estimated Enf '02 Fan
[RPM] ISX 1 ISX 2 ISX 3 Power [Hp]
1100 137 112 124 10

1900 520 515 519 52
2100 560 562 600 70
Conclusions:
- The addition of variable geometry turbo allowed for major improvements in retarding power.
