FOREWORD 0.1 This Indian Standard (Part XII) (First Revision} was adopted by the Indian Standards Insti ‘tution on 10 July 1974, after the draft finalized by the Refractories Sectional Committee had been approved by the Structural and Metals Division Council. 0.2 Methods of sampling and physical tests for refractory materials were inally covered in IS: 48% ‘Methods of sampling and testing of refractory materials (tentative)’. This Indian Standard was first published in 1962 on methods of sampling and physical testing of refractory materials. As a result of experience gained during these years, certain modifications have been made in the methods of sampling, methods of physical tests and the method for the determination of the warpage in refractory materials. The Sectional Committce while issuing this revision felt it desirable to issue the standard in separate parts. Other parts of this standard published so far, cover the followin Part I Determination of pyrometric cone equivalent (PCE) or softening point Part If Determination of refractoriness under load Part Lf Determination of spalling resistance Part IV Determination of cold crushing strength Part V Determination of modulus of rupture Part VI Determination of permanent change after reheating Part VII_ Methods of sampling and criteria of conformity Part VIII Determination of apparent porosity Part IX Determination of tre specific gravity and true density Part X__ Determination of size of refractory bricks Part XY Determination of warpage Part XIII Determination of resistance to the disintegrating effect of carbon monoxide Part XIV Determination of sieve analysis 0.3 In reporting the result of a test or analysis made in accordance with this standard, if the final value, observed or calculated, is to be rounded off, it shall be done in accordance with IS ; 2-1960*. *Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised). 3IS ; 1528 (Part XII) - 1974 1, SCOPE 1.1 This standard (Part XII) prescribes the method of test for determination of bulk density. 2, TERMINOLOGY 2.1 For the purpose of this standard, the definition given in IS : 4041-1967* shall apply. 3. DETERMINATION OF BULK DENSITY 3.1 Direct Measurement Method 3.1.1 General — This method of determining bulk density is applicable to rectangular shapes of refractories only. 3.1.2 Test Specimen — The original rectangular brick or shape shall be used as a test specimen. 3.1.3 Procedure — Weigh the test specimen (VW) to the nearest 50 g and find out the volume (J) from the dimensions obtained in accordance with the procedure given in IS : 1528 (Part X)-1974+. 3.1.4 Calculation — Calculate the bulk density (B) in g/cm? from the formula: Ww v 3.2 Direct Volume Determination Method 3.2.1 General — This method of determining bulk density is preferable for specimens which are branded deeply or are irregular in contour. It is more accurate than the direct measurement method. oz? Test Specimen Test specimen as given in IS :1528 (Part VIII)- t. 3.2.3 Procedure — Find out the dry (D), suspended ($), and saturated (W) weights of the specimen as given in IS: 1528 (Part VITI)-19744. 3.2.4 Calculation — Calculate the bulk density (B) in g/cm, from the following formula : B= a Ws 4.
