Characteristics, Strengths & Weaknesses and Kinds of Quantitative Research

This document provides information about quantitative research methods. It outlines the characteristics, strengths, weaknesses, and different types of quantitative research. The characteristics of quantitative research include being objective, using clearly defined research questions, structured research instruments, numerical data, large sample sizes, and the ability to replicate studies. Strengths include being objective and able to use statistical analysis, while weaknesses require large samples, are costly, and sometimes don't provide explanations. The types of quantitative research described are descriptive research, correlational research, evaluation research, survey research, causal-comparative research, and experimental research.

TASK SHEET NO. 1 Characteristics, Strengths & Weaknesses and Kinds of

Quantitative Research
CONTENT STANDARD: The learner demonstrates understanding of the
characteristics, strengths, weaknesses, and kinds of quantitative research.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD: The learner is able to decide on suitable quantitative

research in different areas of interest.

OBJECTIVES: The student should be able to identify and describe characteristics,

strengths, weaknesses, and kinds of quantitative research.
CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH
1. Objective 5. Large sample sizes
2. Clearly defined research questions 6. Replication
3. Structured research instruments 7. Future Outcomes
4. Numerical Data
Strengths Weaknesses
1. Objective 1. Requires large number of respondents
2. Uses statistical 2. It is costly
treatment
3. Explanations are usually ignored
3. Numerical data can 4. Many information are difficult to gather
be analyzed quickly
5. If not done seriously and correctly, data from
and easily
questionnaires may be incomplete and
inaccurate.

KINDS OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

 Descriptive Research - This design is concerned with describing the nature,
characteristics, and components of the population or phenomenon. There is no
manipulation of variables or search for cause or effect
 Correlational Research - It is a systematic investigation of the nature of
relationships or associations between and among variables without necessarily
investigating into causal reasons underlying them.
 Evaluation Research - This kind of research aims to assess the effects,
impacts or outcomes of practices, policies or programs.
 Survey Research - This is used to gather information from groups of people by
selecting and studying samples chosen from a population.
 Causal-Comparative Research - It is also known as ex post facto (after the
fact) research. It derives conclusions from observations and manifestations that
already occurred in the past and now compared to some dependent variables.
 Experimental Research - This research utilizes method to test cause-and-
effect relationships under conditions controlled by the researcher.

I. DIRECTIONS: Match the characteristics of research in Column A to its

description in Column B by drawing a line to connect the two.

A B
1. Objective a. Reliable quantitative studies can be
2. Numerical Data repeated to verify or confirm the
3. Structured Research Instruments correctness of the results in
4. Large Sample Sizes another setting.
5. Replication b. To arrive at a more reliable data
analysis, a normal population
distribution curve is preferred.
Random sampling is
recommended.
c. Data are in form of numbers and
statistics, often organized using
tables, charts, graphs, and
figures that consolidate large
numbers of data.
d. Data are normally gathered using
structured research tools such as
questionnaires.
e. It seeks accurate measurement and
analysis of target concepts. It is
not based on mere intuitions and
guesses.

II. DIRECTIONS: Read the following statements carefully. Identify the

strengths and weaknesses specified in the given situations and explain your
choice.

1. Needs a lot of time of the researcher in collecting data from respondents.
