IDENTIFYING ELECTRICAL
POWER TOOLS
3
I What I need to know?
Tools can be considered as extension of human hand thereby increasing its
speed, power and accuracy. This lesson will discuss the different electrical tools
and its proper usage to multiply the manual work of human.

I What is new?
Advantages of using proper electrical tools
1. Efficiency of the work is met.
2. High quality of work is achieved.
3. Accomplishment of the task is faster.
4. Accuracy is obtained.
5. It is less stressful on the part of the user.

However, these advantages depend upon the three factors, namely:

 Availability and sufficiency of materials,
 Experience and skill of the worker in using the tools, and
 Quality of tools and equipment.

Different kinds of construction tools may be classified according to the different

kinds of trade namely:
 Carpentry tools  Tinsmith tools  Plumbing tools
 Masonry tools  Painters tools  Electrical tools

COMMON ELECTRICAL POWER TOOLS USED BY

ELECTRICIANS

PORTABLE ELECTRICAL DRILL – This is a portable drilling machine with an

adjustable chuck. Some kinds are of adjustable speed and are reversible. Below
are some types of portable electric drills.

1. PISTOL GRIP – This is a versatile type of drill with a standard pistol grip
associated with several attachments. This drill is used only for drilling metals and
wood.
2. HAMMER DRILL – Also called masonry drill he hammer drill is commonly used
with concrete or brick. It is designed with a hammer mechanism that is rotating.
Some hammer drills can be used for both drilling o hammering.
3. CORDLESS DRILL – Unlike the pistol and hammer drill a cordless drill uses a
rechargeable battery pack to power itself. It has an adjustable speed and torque.

USES OF A PORTABLE ELECTRIC DRILL

1. Used in place of a screwdriver – By using a screw bit, an electrician can use
the portable electric drill to drive screw. Its variable speed makes screwing almost
effortless. It has a reversible rotation, which makes it function doubly well as a
screwdriver.
2. Used to create pilot holes – Pilot holes are made with a bit one size smaller
than the diameter of the screws to be inserted into the wood or metal. Creating
pilot holes helps in driving the screws easier and in avoiding splits.
3. Used as a hole saw – Portable electric drills can be used to create holes on
wooden partition or drywall using various sizes of hole saw bit.
4. Used as hammer drill – This drill used as portable hammer drill in lieu of a
percussion hammer drill, can more easily create holes on a concrete wall or slab
when installing machine bolts and plastic plugs or tux.
5. Used as general drilling machine – Portable drills are also used to drill holes
on woods or metals, etc.

SAFETY TIPS IN USING THE PORTABLE POWER DRILL

• Make sure drills is clean and free from dirt and rust
• Inspect for broken cord, exposed wires, or even cracked drill housing regularly
• Make sure the drill is set straight into the drill chuck before starting to drill
Commence drilling with the bit positioned perpendicular to the material being
drilled. Then drill with steadiness and care.

PORTABLE ELECTRIC ANGLE GRINDER – Also known as a side grinder, this

power tool has many uses in the field of construction and fabrication, like grinding
metals and cutting stones, concretes, and even tiles. In electric installation, the
main use of an angle grinder with a diamond cutting disc is to cut concrete walls
for easier facilitation or chipping of concretes when imbedding conduits into
concrete walls or slabs.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS IN HANDLING A PORTABLE ELECTRIC ANGLE
GRINDER
Like any other power tools, an angle grinder may also cause injury to the
operator and to the other workers nearby if not handled properly. The most
common injury is injury to the hands and eyes.
To ensure the safety of the operator and the nearby workers, the following
precautions must be observed.
• Use attachment designed for angle grinder
• Make sure that the attachment centre hole matches the size of the angle
grinder spindle
• Do not remove the guard of the angle grinder
• Do not apply pressure to the machine during use
• Do not use liquid when working angle grinder to avoid electric shock
• Always make sure that the angle grinder already stopped before putting it
down
• Do not position the body directly behind the angle grinder when working
• Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment when working
• Make sure that the work area is well lighted, ventilated, and free from any
flammable materials.

PORTABLE ELECTRIC PIPE THREADER – This power tool is used in threading

conduit pipes. A potable power threading machine is usually used in large scale
construction because it increases the speed of accomplishing the job.

Power Tool Rules
 Use your tool only for the specific task it was designed for.
 Read the owner's manual before using your tool.
 Never use any tool (power or manual) unless you are trained to do so.
 Inspect before each use and replace or repair if parts are worn out or
damaged.
E 

Inspect screws, nuts, bolts and moveable parts to make sure they are
tightened.
Before plugging or unplugging tools, make sure that the power switch is turned
"OFF."
 Never disconnect power by pulling out the cord. Remove the plug from the
outlet.
 Never clean or repair a tool in use unless power is disconnected. (Repair tools
only if you are trained to do so.)
 When working on ladders or scaffolding, rest power tools on a flat surface or in
a bin secured to the ladder itself. (A falling tool can seriously injure a coworker
or a bystander)
 Use a ground fault circuit interrupter when working with power tools.
 Avoid wearing of rings, jewelry, or loose clothing when operating power tools.
 Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as face shields, safety
goggles, disposable masks, and other required PPE

Common Defects of Electrical Power Tools

1. Mechanical Parts 2. Electrical Parts

a. Chuck – rusted or stock – up a. Switch (lock, reversing and
b. Bearing – worn – out trigger) – defective
c. Rotor Shaft – worn – out b. Line cord – open line
c. Carbon brush – worn – out
d. Rotor winding – shorted / open
e. Stator winding – shorted / open
