Lab Report 5

This lab report describes procedures for determining the modulus of elasticity of a concrete cylinder sample according to ASTM C469 standards. The procedures involve loading the sample in a testing frame attached to compressometers and gauges to measure stress and strain. The sample is loaded twice to 40% of its compressive strength to seat the gauges. Initial tangent, secant, and chord moduli values are then calculated based on the recorded stress-strain data and plotted on a graph. The equipment used includes a 60,000 lb UTM, gauge buster, compressometers, and concrete cylinders.

LAB REPORT 5

1. SCOPE:-
Determine modulus of elasticity of concrete cylinder using ASTM C469

2. METHODLOGY:-
Fol method should be followed:-
a. Prior to performing test, use companion specimen to determine the compressive strength of
the concrete cylinder.
b. After attaching compressometer to the specimen, load the specimen at least twice to 40% of
the cylinders compressive strength to seat the gauges.
c. ASTM test speed: Screw machine=0.05in/min , Hydraulic= 35+/- 5 psi/sec.
3. PROCEDURE:-
a. Place the sample in test frame.
b. Use reference circles on the platen to center the specimen.
c. Determine the initial and stabilized secant modulus.
d. Start E modulus software and input sample data and set measuring channels
e. Connect cable to compressometer
f. Check cycles and step to loading cycles
g. Plot Stress/Strain Graph

4. APPARTUS:-
a. 60,000 lbs. Baldwin UTM
b. ADMET Gauge Buster
c. Compressometer
d. Concrete Cylinders

5. CALCULATIONS:-
(Ultimate Load=36.5 Mpa x40/100=14.6)
a. Initial Tangent Modulus =15/400x10-6=37.5 GPa
b. Secant Modulus= 14.6/(430x10-6)=33.9 GPa
c. Chord Modulus= 14.6-2.5/(430x10-6)-(50x10-6)=31.8 GPa
