Philadelphia is the birthplace of America and the cradle of American brewing. Philadelphia has
hundreds of attractions, events, venues, and museums, drawing millions of visitors annually. The
rich history of Philadelphia brewing parallels the history of our great country. The Philadelphia
Brewing eXperience (PBX) will capture that history and will be a world
class destination, craft brewery, restaurant, event space, and
academy. To be (tentatively) located in a tourist/ recreation
district of south Philadelphia, the 20,000 +- facility, will
feature outdoor beer gardens, entertainment, and free
parking. PBX will be a lively, dynamic facility that will
house the foremost collection of regional brewing
memorabilia displayed throughout the building.
Central to the concept is the Philadelphia Brewing Academy . The academy will be an accred-
ited program graduating qualified brewers and will feature a comprehensive brewing business
incubator. Public courses and seminars will offer deeper “dives” into the brewing arts and
sciences. Continuing education programs will be offered for working brewers. A generous mer-
chandise store will carry branded collectables and all manner of merchandise. The brewpub will
contain a 7BBL. working micro brewery producing historically correct styles and event specialty
beers with guest brewers. Multiple taps will pour Philadelphia and Pennsylvania’s best beers.
The team that is leading the effort to develop the museum includes Phila. brewing luminaries
of present and past. (see advisors ) Our team includes owners of current major local breweries
aswell as the families of historic Phila. brewers and notable Phila. business leaders.

HISTORY
The first documented brewery in Philadelphia was established in 1685. There were at least
six commercial breweries operating when the Founding Fathers would retire to the City
Tavern to debate and hash out the Declaration of Independence. As America grew, so did
the brewing business, and it was all craft beer! In the 1840s, a German immigrant named
John Wagner was credited with brewing America’s first lager beer in Philadelphia. Before
refrigeration, ice caves of some 50,000 cubic feet were carved into the rocky banks of the
Schuylkill River for storing that new lager beer.

Over the centuries there have been too many Philadelphia brewers to name. By 1876, Phila-
delphia had 94 breweries producing 650,000 barrels per year. By 1895, the brewery of Bergner
and Engel alone was producing more than 250,000 barrels. Every neighborhood in the city had
multiple breweries serving customers from as many nations. In fact, we still have a neighborhood
called Brewerytown. After the repeal of Prohibition, consolidations, competition, and changing
tastes, drained the Philadelphia brewing business until the closing of Schmidt’s in 1987. For the
first time in more than 300 years, there were no operating breweries left in Philadelphia.

HISTORY
It was at that time that the modern craft brewing renaissance began. The Boston Beer Co.’s
Sam Adams (Samsom St) and Dock Street (Cherry St.) opened new brewpub craft breweries
and, slowly, others followed. Craft beer had come back to Philadelphia, arguably before its
time. Thirty years later, we are witnessing the resurgence of real brewing in America. There are
now more than 7,000 craft breweries nationwide, and Philadelphia is just getting started! New
styles of beers are being developed and explored as the craft beer market grows and continues
to evolve. With still less than 20 breweries in Philadelphia, on a per capita basis, the city is
dramatically underserved.
We aim to create the most innovative, dynamic, interactive, sustainable, brewery experience
ever imagined. For reference: The top six metro areas for most breweries are: Chicago (167),
Denver (158), Seattle (153), San Diego (150), Los Angeles (146) and New York (141). Philadelphia
is the epicenter of American history, and Philadelphia brewing is woven into that history. The
rich story of Philadelphia brewing needs to be seen, heard, and tasted. Raise a pint and join us
for … THE PHILADELPHIA BREWING EXPERIENCE!
