Art Integration Project

This document discusses incorporating art into the classroom. It argues that art can benefit students' learning abilities, social skills, and help manage stress. The author plans to use art both for educational purposes and creative expression. Specific ideas discussed include using simple art projects that combine art and science to cover multiple subjects, and having students analyze artworks to describe meaning and mood. A lesson plan is proposed where students will create bar graphs and picture graphs using art materials to meet both math and art standards. The document advocates that art has many uses beyond just drawing and coloring.

Philosophy

Incorporating art into a child’s everyday lifestyle can make a huge difference in not only

their learning abilities, but their social abilities, and sensory needs. Art can also serve as a coping

technique, be used for brain breaks, as well as be educational. Art comes in all shapes and sizes.

Art, especially when in the classroom, can be different than the typical image of coloring,

painting, and making crafts.

Taking breaks from learning, tough quizzes, studying, and anything else that may cause

students to stress, helps the brain relax. Taking time away from the hard work of school and

putting time and effort into something else that can seem more fun to the students will in the end

help them to enjoy and focus more on what is being taught.

I personally have experienced the positives of art in all different forms and how they can

be beneficial. A few of these forms include, painting, coloring, creating crafts, dancing, creating

objects, creating ideas, watching movies, and more. Although some of these can seem confusing

on how they can help in a classroom, when made educational and enjoyable, they can help all

students. There are different types of art that will suit each student and what they enjoy to do.

Personally, I am also a visual learner so by writing information down or coloring it, or even

drawing more about the topic and leave a larger imprint in my mind than simply the words that

were spoken to me.

When in the classroom as the teacher, I will incorporate art and creative ideas in order to

help my students learn more efficiently. I will also allow my students to create art whenever the

time is appropriate and when it is most beneficial to them. I will allow my students to be as

creative as they want so they are able to fully express themselves. I plan to incorporate art in

both an education form and a creative form. There are also many aspects of my classroom in

general that I plan to add an artistic touch to.

How art will be used in the classroom

The Art Adaptation article provided five amazing ideas of easy artwork with simple

classroom items and materials that anyone can create. The article specifically discussed the

special education students in the classroom. She came up artwork that could be created by

anyone with simple materials that wouldn’t set students apart from others. Not only did she give

five basic and easy examples of art, but she also gave examples of how to change them to meet

the needs of all students. She described students that would not like certain textures and how

they could adjust to still be able to create!

The diffusion art example was a great example to watch since it incorporates both art and

science and can cover two standards. The activity is so simple that everyone can do it but it is

unique and students will be very proud of themselves when they are done. There were only a few

materials needed and they were all common household and classroom items. This activity can be

used both for a brain break and for learning content.

The ‘Art to Text’ video gave me great ideas and opened my eyes to when the more

traditional artwork is being taught. The students were reading the art and looking at all the

components involved with it and what the mood was, what the picture was actually saying and

the meaning behind it instead of simply saying it is a house. Although artwork can be turned into

different types and used with different materials and tools, looking at paintings can help students

learn how to describe and communicate more than other artworks.

Lesson Plan
ART INTEGRATION PROJECT 4

For my lesson plan, I am incorporating a third-grade art standard and a third-grade

mathematics standard. The art standard covers using purposeful materials and tools. The

mathematics standard covers creating bar graphs and picture graphs and then looking at them to

determine what categories have more or less than the others. Students will be creating their own

bar graphs and picture graphs. They will then use art materials and tools to create the pictures or

symbols and the bars for the graphs. They have unlimited options including pipe cleaners for the

bars, shapes, printed pictures, drawings, and more.

Overall from this project, I have learned there is more to art than just drawing and

coloring. There endless opportunities for students to create art, incorporate it into their everyday

learning, use it for brain breaks and to relax, learn about the history, use it to learn about other

subjects, and use it around the classroom.
