Homework 1

Practice Test 1 Answer Key

Note: Please answer on a separate sheet of paper (yellow pad).

1. State whether the relation defines y as a function of x. [5 points]

(a) {(2, 3), (4, 1), (4, 5)} Answer: Not a Function
(b) 3x + y = 1 Answer: Function
(c) −4x2 + y2 = 9 Answer: Not a Function
Solution 1: Express y in terms of x.
√ √
y = 9 + 4x2 = ± 9 + 4x2
Substitute a random value for x and solve for y.
√ √ √ √
If x = 1: y = 13 and − 13 → (1, 13), (1, − 13) not a function
Solution 2: Plot −4x2 + y2 = 9 in the xy-plane and apply the vertical line test. Since
the vertical line intersects the graph at 2 points, −4x2 + y2 = 9 is not a function.

(d) 2x + 3y = 7 Answer: Function

(e) y2 = x2 Answer: Not a Function
Solution 1: Express y in terms of x.

y = x2 = ±x
Substitute a random value for x and solve for y.
If x = 1: y = 1 and −1 → {(1, 1), (1, −1)} not a function
Solution 2: Plot y2 x2
= in the xy-plane and apply the vertical line test. Since the
vertical line intersects the graph at 2 points, y2 = x2 is not a function.
2. Let f(x) = x2 − 1, and evaluate. [5 points]
(a) f(−5)
Solution: f(−5) = (−5)2 − 1 = 25 − 1 = 24
(b) f(3b)
Solution: f(3b) = (3b)2 − 1 = 9b2 − 1
(c) 3f(b)
Solution: 3f(b) = 3(b2 − 1) = 3b2 − 3
(d) f(a + 3)
Solution: f(a + 3) = (a + 3)2 − 1 = a2 + 6a + 9 − 1 = a2 + 6a + 8
(e) f(a) + f(3)
Solution: f(a) + f(3) = (a2 − 1) + (32 − 1) = (a2 − 1) + (9 − 1) = a2 + 7

3. Determine the domain of the function represented by the given equation. [5 points]
(a) f(x) = 3x − 4 Answer: Domain: (−∞, ∞)
(b) f(x) = x2 + 2 Answer: Domain: (−∞, ∞)
4
(c) f(x) = Answer: Domain: (−∞, −2) ∪ (−2, ∞)
x+2

(d) f(x) = 7 + x Answer: Domain: [−7, ∞)
(e) f(x) = −2x + 1 Answer: Domain: (−∞, ∞)
