Speak Effectively
Speak Effectively
Speaking effectively is defined as speaking in such a way that your message is clearly heard and,
if possible, acted upon. There are two main elements to speaking effectively: what you say, and
how you say it. What you say means your choice of words. The words you might use when
chatting to a friend are likely to be quite different from those used in a formal presentation or
interview.
For instance, the music of such stars as Elvis Presley, Micheal Jackson, The Beatles, Aerosmith
and Madonna has encouraged fans to speak the language of their idols. Many others have
enrolled in English classes just to improve their understanding of the dialogue in their favourite
films and TV shows. Or perhaps they have embraced English to enjoy the writing of Stephen
King, George Orwell or J. K. Rowling. They may even have an interest in speaking English just
to converse with travelers from other countries, who communicate by using the English global
interlingua while travelling abroad.
Now you know, if you are studying English at school, college or university, remember that
getting an A grade in English is almost worthless in terms of communication. If you cannot
speak the English language effectively. Spoken English is used in the best careers, the best
universities and is increasingly being used at job interviews. So like it or not, English is a very
important language to learn how to speak effectively. Being able to read and write in English is
not enough. ¢ The need for speech training Speech is one of the 3 fundamental communication
modes.
The ability to communicate through effective speaking is as important to develop language skill
as is the ability to write effectively. Learning to speak English well may be the best thing you
can do to improve your life. Thats right. Do you think it would be fun to have access to
information that other people cant get? Make big jumps in your career and leaving others miles
behind? Talk and write letters to other people that others cant communicate? Well, you can get
all this if you can speak English well. There are many more advantage for those who can speak
English well. Let me brief you some of the advantages.
The motivation to learn English in postcolonial nations like Malaysia, is no longer the
compulsion of imperialistic colonialism. Current motivation is partly directed by politics, and
primarily driven by the growth of information technology in science and technology and world
economics. The use and need of English language in Malaysia has become more important
nowadays. As mentioned by Crystal (1995) found in Ganakumaran (2007) studies, she suggests
six reasons for the spread of the English language in Malaysia. 1. Historical (i. e. as a result of a
colonial legacy); 2. Internal politics (i. e. he maintenance of English as a neutral language of
communication between different ethnic groups); 3. External economic reasons (i. e. to
participate in international trade and business); 4. Practical reasons (i. e. for international
utilitarian functions); 5. Intellectual reasons (i. e. for acquisition of information on science,
technology and on academic subjects); 6. Entertainment (i. e. to be part of the mainstream
popular culture). The age of pragmatism has forced the need for postcolonial nations like
Malaysia to negotiate priorities nationalism and internationalism in favour of the English
language.
A validation of this negotiation in Ganakumaran (2007), by our previous Prime Minister Tun
Mahathir (1999), saying that learning in English language will reinforce the spirit of nationalism
when it is used to bring about development and progress for the country and true nationalism
means doing everything possible for the country, even if it means learning the English language.
In another finding in Ganakumaran (2007) by Pennycook (1994). The apparent difference
between the present-day spread of the English language to that of the colonial period is that it is
natural, neutral and mutually beneficial, as it is the result of globalization.
This heterogeneous situation gives rise to comparison and evaluation between the varieties Based
on research by Ru (2010). With globalisation and the advent of information technology, the
English language has become more important for second language. It was also found in Bolton
(2008) saying that the contemporary visibility and importance of English throughout the Asian
region coupled with the emergence and development of distinct varieties of Asian Englishes
have played an important part in the global story of English in recent years. Advantage during
the jobs interviews.
Some business that deal with international clients and suppliers rely on English speaking
employees to help with operations to interpret, translate and communicate with English speaking
customers and clients. Being fluent in English can improve employment opportunities. Youve
probably read of the many ways you need to prepare for a job interview and heard about how to
dress and to act. While all of these things are important it is also important to pay attention to
your English. When you talk to some one that uses poor English, the first thought that comes to
your mind is this person is unintelligent.
Would you hire this person for a job? The answer to this question is probably no. If someone use
poor English, it is likely that they are unintelligent or uneducated. People will always judge you
by the way you look and by the things you say. When in a job interview you cant be lacking in
either area. The first step in preparing for your job interview is to practice speaking. In addition
to job opportunities, there are other opportunities available for those who fluent in English.
Fluent in English can improve the chances of being accepted into advanced training programs or
universities in English speaking countries.
Travel The English language is predominantly spoken throughout the world, so international
travelers may find that English can make their travels a little easier. Most hotel and restaurant
employees, as well as store merchants, probably speak English to some degree. Crystal (2003),
mentioned English is a global language. You can hear on television spoken by politicians from
all over the world. Whenever you enter a hotel or restaurant in a foreign city, they will
understand English, and there will be an English menu. Academics
English language is the language of academics all over the world, with a large number of
research conducted, written and presented in English. Knowing English very much helpful for
scholars who wish to communicate their ideas or perhaps their research findings to peers in their
field. Statement by Tun Mahatir Mohamed found in research by Gill (2005), when he was asked
the important of English, he said that education is for the purpose of knowledge. If you have to
use a language which makes the knowledge more easily accessible, you should use that
language, ¦. Our education system is like any other education system.
It is meant to enable us to acquire knowledge. If we have the knowledge available in the national
language, by all means, do¦. but the fact is that in science the research that is being done is
moving at a very fast pace. Everyday literally thousands of papers on new research is being
published and practically all of them are in English. To translate English into Bahasa, would
require a person with three skills. Skill in the two languages and skill in the subject that is to be
translated and we dont have very many people who are qualified to do that or who wish to do
that.
