EMPTY CAN INSPECTOR

DESCRIPTION

________________________________________________

1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The filtec ®
ECI (Empty Can Inspector) is a PC vision system,

mainly based on the electronics of the filtec ®

SpectroVision.

Depending on the requested applications various inspection

options can be added to the basic system to meet the customer's
individual requirements.

The electronics are installed in stainless steel housing, mounted on

a height-adjustable pedestal. The various height adjustments can
be reproduced via a counter mounted at the pedestal (see Figure
1).

2. SYSTEM SET-UP

2.1 Processor

A PC with an extremely high operation speed is used to read the

required inspection data from the camera and to calculate the
requested algorithms. For the high capacity of this application the
system requires three processor cards. All computers are
connected in a network in order to operate the ECI via one user
interface.

2.2 Camera

This ECI system uses three cameras:

 Two cameras are mounted above the passing cans, the first
inspecting the inner can, the second inspecting the top surface.
The light for both inspections is produced by a LED ring strobe
mounted below the camera optics. Both cameras use the same
optical axis to inspect the inner can and the top surface at the
same time, thus allowing the two inspections to be made in a very
narrow space.

 Using front light the third camera inspects the can sidewall from
aside via a 45° mirror (equal to the first and second camera). The
only difference is that this camera works with continuous
fluorescent light.

3. OPERATION

The operation of the ECI is done via an integrated mouse, all

information are displayed on a 15" monitor. All settings for the start-
up of the system or format change-overs are done via a keyboard
which can be called-up from the program. During regular operation
this procedure is not necessary as the pre-set change-over data
are selected with a software button.

The various menu levels are password protected enabling the

customer to define who of his operating personnel can reach
certain software levels.

4. TRACKER BOARD

The tracker board controls the signals within the entire system. The
serial data exchange between the various computers controls:

 The signal transfer (e.g. trigger etc.)

 the assignment of the inspection results to the individual containers

 the reject of the correct container

5. STATISTICS

The system displays the following counters and transfers the

values to the ODC (Operating Data Capture) system:

 total throughput

 total rejects

 reject can inner sidewall

 reject can top surface

 reject logo

The following two pictures show the various images from the cameras:

1. Can sidewall and bottom (faults in the upper sidewall, beneath the
necked-in sidewall area). The bright reflection is the top surface of
the can.

2. Bulged sidewall can, inspection via two radial inspection areas.
