DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS
HPH207 / HETT 204: APPLICATIONS OF ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND CIRCUITS
June 2020: Assignment 1 :

1. What is meant by the term transistor biasing? Why is biasing needed in transistor
amplifier circuits? [4]
2. Describe differences among active region, saturation region, and cutoff region of a
transistor in terms of the junction biasing. [6]
3. Figure 1 is the circuit diagram of a simple series voltage regulator.
a) State the configuration of the transistor T1- [1]
b) When the circuit is functioning normally, explain how a stable output voltage is
maintained when the unregulated input voltage increases. [5]

4. The circuit of a common emitter transistor amplifier shown in Figure 2 has the load line
shown on the family of output characteristics in Figure 2 (attached).

a) Calculate the values of the resistors RB and RC. [5]

b) The base current varies by  20 A when a sinusoidal voltage of amplitude 20 mV is
applied to the input terminal. Draw on Figure 3 the waveforms of the resulting collector
current and VCE. [5]
5. The transistor in Figure 1 has the parameter  = 99. For VCC=24 V, VBB = 5 V, RE = 1
k, RC = 5.6 k, RB = 80 k, find the value of IC and VCE at the quiescent point. (Assume
VBE = 0.7 V)

6. a) Draw the truth table for a two-input NAND gate. [2]
b) Distinguish between combinational logic and sequential logic in digital systems.[2]
c) Draw a schematic diagram that shows how JK flip-flops may be used to produce a
T-type flip-flop [3]
d) Show how D-type flip flops may be used in the design of a 3-bit register. [7]
