Petroleum Engineering Laboratory V EG 321

This lab report describes an experiment on lithostratigraphic correlation. The objective was to correlate sediment deposit units between wells using key beds. Students observed signature indications of equivalent time and learned to do both general and detailed correlation. The theory section explained that correlation connects stratigraphic units by realizing equivalent time through matching of beds and phenomena in different locations. There are organic and inorganic correlation methods, and operational correlation follows bed continuity under the assumption of time equivalence. The procedure instructed students to correlate units generally with red pencil first, then detail each bed with black pencil, differentiating deposit colors.

SUBMISSION DATE: 8-July-2020

FACULTY OF ENGINEERING, TECHNOLOGY AND BUILT

ENVIRONMENT, UCSI UNIVERSITY
MAY-AUGUST 2020
Objective

To correlate the sediment deposit units by using the general keybeds.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the experiment, the students will be able to:

1. Observe the signature of equivalent time indication.
2. Do correlation in general or detail.
3. Understand the correlation technique principally and operationally.

Theory
Correlation is one method that used to illustrate bedding configuration and geological
structure in one basin or certain place on the earth crust, by connecting the stratigraphic units.
Example if we want to follow the oil bedding. It is not easy job, because oil bedding often
truncation, disappear, and sometime facies changes occur.
The concept of correlation is an effort of realization of the relation between times with
stratigraphic units from different places or precisely is the realization of the equivalent time
with geology phenomena. Practically the equivalent time is realized in bedding, and the same
phenomena also can find at the same bedding. This principle in the huge area can be realized
in an-organic evolution as well. One species or genus of animal or plantation which is just
appear or disappear or grow at certain time together with the geological history of certain
place over the world. Therefore, there are two methods for correlation: an-organic correlation
and organic correlation. Basically, operational correlation is to follow the continuity of
bedding with assumption of time equivalent.

Procedure
1. Correlate the sediment deposit units from each well as general by using the keybeds. Draw
this correlation line with red pencil.
2. Complete the detail correlation for each bed, bed by bed with normal pencil (black).
3. To make it easy, differentiate sediment deposits color, such as conglomerate (purple),
sandstone (pale yellow), marine shale (without color/white), limestone (pale blue), carbon
shale (grey), tuff (brown) and etc.
