A. Introduction
This lesson was designed and written with you in mind. It is
here to help you master the nature of Numbers. The scope
of this lesson permits it to be used in many different
learning situations. The language used recognizes the
diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But
the order in which you read them can be changed to
correspond with the textbook you are now using.

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

1. round numbers to the nearest thousand and ten
thousand
2. demonstrates understanding whole numbers up to
100 000
3. recognize and represent whole numbers up to 100

Welcome to the lesson of Numbers and Number Sense. This
lesson will give you the practical application of rounding
numbers in a real-life situation. When you are in Grade 3,
you already encountered this lesson focusing on rounding
numbers to the nearest tens and hundreds. But in this
module, let’s take into a deeper sense on how this topic can
be useful in our daily life, this time focusing on rounding
numbers to the nearest thousand and ten thousand. Are
you all ready?

In understanding this lesson, we need to know the

prerequisite concept and skills as follows:

1) Identifying the place value of a number

2) Rounding numbers to the nearest tens and hundreds

3) Concept of reading and writing a number

4) Concept of up and down

B. Development
Let us first assess what you have already know about the
lesson.

1) 53 218 rounded to the nearest ten thousands is

_____________.

a. 5000 b. 50 000 c. 500 000 d. 5 000 000

2). Which number is rounded to the nearest thousand

a. 800 b. 2 700 c. 5 000 d. 60 000

3) 90 000 is rounded to the nearest

a. tens b. thousands

c. ten thousands d. hundred thousands

4) What number is rounded to the nearest ten thousands?

a. 8 000 b. 9 300 c. 70 000 d. 100 000

5) Which number will round down to 30 000?

a. 36 578 b. 32 456 c. 37 456 d. 39 678

6) Which of the following is rounded to the nearest ten

thousands?

a. 50 000 b. 53 000 c. 57 500 d. 67 090

7) 86 000 is rounded to the nearest____________.

Jonalyn E. Perido June 2020

a. tens b. thousands

c. ten thousands d. hundred thousands

8) What number is rounded to the nearest thousands?

a. 60 000 b. 48 000 c. 6 700 d. 9 400

9) Which number is round down to 80 000?

a. 79 578 b. 82 456 c. 87 456 d. 89 678

10) What is 45 136 rounded to the nearest thousands?

a. 40 000 b. 45 000 c. 50 000 d. 55 000

Before we proceed in our lesson, let’s go back to where we

start. What have you remembered about landmark numbers
and place value?

Landmark Numbers- are numbers that are easy to work

with. We use these numbers when we “skip count by tens”
( 10,20,30…. As if were rounding numbers to the nearest
tens.

Place value is a value of a digit that relates its position or

place in a number. Each digit is given a place value
depending on its position or place in a number; ones, tens,
hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands
and so on.

Let us try to relate landmark numbers and place value on

our exercises about rounding numbers.

Let’s see what you already know.

Round the following numbers to the to nearest tens and

hundreds. Write your answer on your paper
A. Nearest tens
1.) 58
2.) 73
B. Nearest hundreds
3.) 571
4.) 926
5.) 689

Let us understand first the concept of rounding, Rounding

means making a number simpler but keeping its value close
to what it was. It also means adjusting the digits up or down
to make rough calculations easier. The result will be
estimated answer rather than a precise one.

Rounding whole numbers is the process by which we

change the number to the nearest 10, 100, or 1 000 to make
calculations easier.

Jonalyn E. Perido June 2020

Let’s take a deep understanding of this concept by reading
and analyzing the problem below.

Read and analyze the problem carefully.

Alitha harvested 4 389 kilograms of mangoes and 4 656

bananas. About how many kilograms of mangoes and
bananas were harvested?
Who harvested the fruits?
What fruits were harvested?
How many kilograms of mangoes and bananas were
harvested?
How can we solve the problem?
How can we estimate 4 389, and 4 656?
1 . Alitha harvested mango and banana fruits.

2 . Alitha harvested 4 389 kilograms of mangoes and 4 656

bananas.

3. Say: Let us use the number line. Label it from 4000 or

5000.

◄----I---------I----------I----------I----------I----------I----------
I---------I--------I--------I--------I-----►
4000 4100 4200 4300 4400 4500 4600
4700 4800 4900 5000

Ask: To what number is 4 389 nearer to 4000 or 5000?

Say: Since it is closer to 4000, the number will remain the
same.
Ask: What digit is at the right of 4?
Say: If the digit to the right of the digit to be rounded is less
than 5 which is 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, round down. The digit to be
rounded will remain the same and other digits to the right
will become zero. So, 4 389 rounded to the nearest
thousands will become 4 000.
Ask: To what number is 4 656 nearer to 4000 or 5000?
Say: It is closer to 5 000, Look at the number to the right of
4?
Ask: What digit is at the right of 4?
Say: If the digit to the right of the digit to be rounded is 5, 6,
7, 8, and 9 round up by adding 1 to the digit to be rounded
and the other digits to its right will become zero. That is why
4 656 become 5 000.
Ask: About how many kilos of mangoes and bananas were
harvested?
Say: Alitha harvested about 4 000 mangoes and 5 000
bananas.

Let’s try another problem.

Jonalyn E. Perido June 2020

There are 31, 529 residents in the municipality of Mendez-
Nuñez who are benefiting from the Clean and Green
Program of the government. About how many residents were
benefited from the program
Answer the following questions:
What municipality benefited from the Clean and Green
Program of the government?
How many residents were benefited in the municipality of
Mendez-Nuñez?
What is asked in the problem? How will you solve the
problem? How will you round 31 529 to the nearest ten
thousands?
1. Mendez-Nuñez was benefited from the Clean and Green
Program of the government.

2. There are 31, 529 residents who are benefiting from the
Clean and Green Program 3. The problem is asking for the
estimated number of residents who benefited from the
program.

4. To solve the problem we need to round 31, 529 to the

nearest ten thousands. Since the number in the thousands
place is 3 and the digit to its right is 1 which is less than
five, the digit to be rounded off will remain the same.

5. 31 529 rounded to the nearest ten thousands will

become 30 ,000.
