Adding Class Materials & Topics
Resources may be in the form of materials (such as handouts, e-books, lecture presentations, and other
instructional resources you share with your students), or course topics. Topics are essential in managing
your class since they help you organize the materials you shared, assignments, and assessments you
gave.
13
Creating Assignments
The Assignment is one of the key features in Google Classroom. When you create an assignment, you
can post it immediately, save a draft, or schedule it to post at a later date. After students complete and
turn in their work, you can grade and return it to the students.

Communicating using Google Classroom
20
Teacher to Students and Co-teachers Communication
In addition to assigning, grading, and giving feedback to student's work, Google Classroom allows you
to communicate with your students either general class announcements (using Stream page) or via
email. Teachers who want to communicate with co-teachers in the Google Classroom can use the
Stream page and email.
21
Students to Teachers and Classmates Communication
As a collaborative learning environment, students can also communicate with their teachers and
classmates in the Google Classroom. They can do this by posting in the Stream page, sending emails to
teachers/classmates, and mentioning/tagging classmates in public posts.
22
Teacher to Parents/Guardians Communication
Parents and guardians added to the Google Classroom can receive email summaries* to keep them
informed of current and upcoming events. The email summaries may be sent to parents/guardians in a
daily or weekly basis, and contain works accomplished by the student, missing works, due dates, and
upcoming class activities and events.
23
Alternative Ways to Communicate
If you are using a regular Gmail (G Suite Basic) for your Google Classroom and cannot fully utilized the
Email Summaries for Parents/Guardians feature, here other alternatives for you to explore:

Conducting Virtual Classes using G Suite Products
1. Schedule is key
2. Use the right meeting platform
3. ‘Chunk’ the lessons
4. Focus on active learning
5. Always have a backup
26
1. Schedule is key: Ask your students when is the preferred time for the virtual class, and make a
plan based on their preference. (Tip: Use Google Forms to survey your students' preferred time, and
Google Calendar to invite students for the scheduled virtual class.)
2. Use the right meeting platform: Decide which meeting platform that is fair for everyone. There are
dozens of virtual meeting platforms out there that you can experiment with. Keep in mind that when
deciding on a meeting platform, you need to always consider your students first. (Tip: Try conducting
virtual classes with Google Meet.)
3. 'Chunk' the lessons: If a lesson can be finished in 3 hours for a face-to-face class session, this is not
the case for virtual classes. Divide your lesson into segments of virtual classes. (Tip: Use Google Docs
and Sheets for lesson planning.)
4. Focus on Active Learning: Design a virtual class session that is a balance of an online lecture and a
set of active learning activities. (Tip: Use Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Jamboard and Chrome
Canvas for real-time class activities.)
5. Always have a backup: Do screen recording while doing a virtual class. Share this recorded session
with your students who can't virtually attend the class due to circumstances. Sometimes when virtual
classes won't work but you have to explain important concepts to your students, then do a
pre-recorded lecture have it broadcasted via YouTube. (Tip: Use the Google Meet recording if you are
using the G Suite for Education plan, or other tools like ScreenCastify, QuickTime Player, OBS apps for
screen recording, and YouTube for broadcasting.)
