23
Alternative Ways to Communicate

If you are using a regular Gmail (G Suite Basic) for your Google Classroom and cannot fully utilized the
Email Summaries for Parents/Guardians feature, here other alternatives for you to explore:

● If the student is below 13 years old:

○ Ask the parent to create a Gmail account on behalf of his child. This Gmail address will be
used in joining a Google Classroom. This way both the parent and child have access to
the classroom; or
○ Ask the parent to create a Google account for his child through the Family Link App.
● For students 13 years old and above:
○ Maintain a mailing list of the parents or guardians. This can be done through the
enrollment form (parent's email must be provided) or a simple Google Survey. Send
weekly announcements on the upcoming class activities and events to parents via email.
For students who need special attention, then a private email to the parent will do.
● Facebook Messenger 👌

Conducting Virtual Classes using G Suite Products

Conducting a virtual class is different from doing it face-to-face.

There are so many variables (such as connectivity, availability of the
resources, time, technical skill) to consider. Nevertheless, with good
planning, virtual classes can be conducted in an engaging and
meaningful experience for the learners.
Here are tips I can recommend when conducting virtual classes:

1. Schedule is key
2. Use the right meeting platform
3. ‘Chunk’ the lessons
4. Focus on active learning
5. Always have a backup

26
1. Schedule is key: Ask your students when is the preferred time for the virtual class, and make a
plan based on their preference. (Tip: Use Google Forms to survey your students' preferred time, and
Google Calendar to invite students for the scheduled virtual class.)
2. Use the right meeting platform: Decide which meeting platform that is fair for everyone. There are
dozens of virtual meeting platforms out there that you can experiment with. Keep in mind that when
deciding on a meeting platform, you need to always consider your students first. (Tip: Try conducting
virtual classes with Google Meet.)
3. 'Chunk' the lessons: If a lesson can be finished in 3 hours for a face-to-face class session, this is not
the case for virtual classes. Divide your lesson into segments of virtual classes. (Tip: Use Google Docs
and Sheets for lesson planning.)
4. Focus on Active Learning: Design a virtual class session that is a balance of an online lecture and a
set of active learning activities. (Tip: Use Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Jamboard and Chrome
Canvas for real-time class activities.)
5. Always have a backup: Do screen recording while doing a virtual class. Share this recorded session
with your students who can't virtually attend the class due to circumstances. Sometimes when virtual
classes won't work but you have to explain important concepts to your students, then do a
pre-recorded lecture have it broadcasted via YouTube. (Tip: Use the Google Meet recording if you are
using the G Suite for Education plan, or other tools like ScreenCastify, QuickTime Player, OBS apps for
screen recording, and YouTube for broadcasting.)
