Medication: Expected Pharmacological Action Therapeutic Use

Methylene blue is used to treat acquired methmoglobinemia by promoting the non-enzymatic conversion of metHb to hemoglobin. It works by being converted to leukomethylene blue, which then reduces the ferric iron of metHb to ferrous iron in normal hemoglobin. Complications include serotonin syndrome, hemolytic anemia, anaphylaxis, and others. It is administered intravenously while monitoring for side effects and methomoglobin levels. Interactions with SSRIs and SNRIs can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome.
