The Great Cities Institute is seeking nominations of young leaders to participate in its new Civic
Leadership Training Program. A cohort of 20 emerging leaders that are active in seven Chicago
neighborhoods including Humboldt Park, East and West Garfield Park, Pilsen, Little Village,
North Lawndale, and the Near West Side will have the opportunity to come together to grapple
with complex problems of urban policy and begin to discuss, understand, and propose solutions
that can propel us into this new century.
The Civic Leadership Training Program consists of a series of three half-day workshops for
program participants on policy issues relevant to anyone seeking political office or higher
leadership positions in non-governmental organizations that influence policy. The selected policy
issues are priorities in Chicago neighborhoods – they are: public education and charter schools;
real estate development particularly Tax Increment Financing; youth violence and juvenile
justice; and foreclosures and sub-prime lending.
After participating in the program, individuals will possess a foundational knowledge about each
policy issue, be familiar with basic definitions, existing legislation, and research in each area.
They will also develop the confidence to speak publicly on these topics and their proposed
solutions. Participants will develop strong professional ties and a network with other leaders
through engaging with each other and with UIC faculty experts.
Nomination Criteria
Chicago is fortunate to have many talented, committed, young leaders that dedicate countless
hours towards serving their communities passionately. Ideal candidates for nomination will have
distinguished themselves within their organization or neighborhood through their leadership and
commitment to their community.
