the actual number of battery strings and battery capacity.

Incorrect setting of basic battery parameters affects battery charge and discharge management
and reduces the battery lifespan.

Table 5-1 describes basic battery parameters.

Table 5-1 Basic battery parameters

Parameter Description Default Value

Value Range
Qty of Battery Number of battery shunts 2 0–22
Strings (connected to battery strings) in
each DCD
Rated Capacity Total capacity of the VRLA 3000Ah 10–10000
batteries connecting to each
shunt.

Configuration Example
Figure 5-3 shows a configuration example. The scenario is described as follows:
 The power system is equipped with two DCDs: DCD 1 and DCD 2.
 DCD 1 provides two shunts, each of which connects to two battery strings.
 DCD 2 provides two shunts, one of which connects to two battery strings.
In this example, battery parameters are configured as follows:
 DCD 1: Number of batteries = 2
 DCD 2: Number of batteries = 1
 Rated battery capacity = 2 x Capacity of each battery string
If the capacity of each battery string is 1500 Ah, the value is set to 3000 Ah.

7.1.2 Output Current Control

Principles
Limit the rated output current of rectifiers as required.
When System Control Mode is Automatic, the SMU adjusts the maximum rectifier output
current within the rated output current.
When System Control Mode is Manual, the SMU does not adjust the maximum rectifier
output current, which is the rated output current and can be customized.

7.2 Energy Conservation Management

7.2.1 Intelligent Rectifier Hibernation
Principles
The rectifier efficiency increases in proportion to the load power. If the total load power is low,
certain rectifiers hibernate to increase the load power of working rectifiers and raise the
rectifier efficiency. This facilitates energy conversation. The rectifier service life is prolonged
because rectifier runtime is reduced. Figure 7-1 shows a rectifier efficiency curve.

User Manual 7 Feature Description

Figure 7-1 Rectifier efficiency curve (R48100G1 used as an example)

The SMU controls rectifiers to start and hibernate based on the loading capacity of the power
system. If the load power decreases, the SMU instructs certain rectifiers to hibernate. If the
load power increases, the SMU starts rectifiers to meet load power requirements. To ensure
that all rectifiers operate at the same degree of deterioration, the SMU instructs different
rectifiers to hibernate each time based on their real-time efficiency and runtime. See Figure
7-2.

Figure 7-2 Intelligent rectifier hibernation

If the power system experiences an exception (such as battery loop disconnection, battery
overtemperature, or AC abnormality), all rectifiers stop hibernation. The rectifiers can begin
to hibernate again after the exception is rectified.

7.3 BLVD Management

Principles
If the AC input to the power system becomes abnormal, batteries start to power loads. To
prevent overdischarge, the SMU controls BLVD based on configured parameters.
After the AC input is restored, the SMU connects BLVD routes again.
BLVD management applies only to the power system configured with battery contactors.

 After the BLVD route is disconnected, the power system does not power loads.
 You can disable BLVD. After you disable BLVD, if the mains outage lasts for a long time,
batteries may be damaged due to overdischarge.

The SMU provides three disconnection modes, as described in Table 7-7.

7.4 Lead-Acid Battery Management

7.4.1 Charging Management
Principles
If the AC input to the power system is normal and meets load requirements, rectifiers supply
DC power to loads and charge batteries. If the AC input is abnormal or rectifiers are
overloaded or faulty, the batteries will supply power to loads. After the fault is rectified,
rectifiers continue to supply DC power to loads and charge the batteries.
The SMU enables batteries to switch between float charging and equalized charging by
adjusting the system output voltage.
 Float charging: charges batteries with an appropriate voltage to compensate for
self-discharge after they are fully charged.
 Equalized charging: fully and rapidly charges batteries with an increased output voltage.
During equalized charging, the SMU limits the rectifier output current to prevent battery
damage caused by an excessive charge current.
Figure 7-4 shows the battery charging process.

7.4.2 Temperature Compensation

Principles
To reduce the effect of ambient temperature on batteries, prolong the battery lifespan, and
maintain a reliable charge current, the SMU adjusts the system output voltage based on the
optimal operating temperature, present battery temperature, and temperature compensation
coefficient.
The SMU decreases the system output voltage when the temperature rises and increases it
when the temperature drops. The maximum adjustment range is ±2 V.
Temperature compensation is effective only when batteries are in float charging state. The
SMU does not perform temperature compensation if the battery temperature sensor is
disconnected or faulty.
Figure 7-5 shows the temperature compensation control logic.

7.4.3 High or Low Temperature Alarms and Protection

Principles
As the battery temperature rises, the SMU generates an alarm and takes a preset action to
protect the batteries. This mechanism prevents battery lifespan reduction or battery damage.
Alarms and protective measures are as follows:
1. When the battery temperature exceeds High Temperature Alarm Threshold, the SMU
generates a high temperature alarm.
2. When the battery temperature exceeds Very High Temperature Alarm Threshold, the
SMU implements the selected protection measure.
You can select any of the following protection measures:
− Lower the battery charge voltage
− Disconnect batteries
− Do nothing
If the battery temperature is below Low Temperature Alarm Threshold, the SMU generates
a low temperature alarm.

7.4.6 Balance Monitoring

The SMU monitors the battery balance in real time as follows:
 Monitors the middle point voltage balance.
 Monitors the current balance.

(Optional) Monitoring the Middle Point Voltage Balance

The SMU monitors the voltage balance for all batteries in each battery string in real time by
using a signal cable for monitoring battery middle point voltages. If the battery voltages are
unbalanced, the SMU generates a Battery n Voltage Imbalance alarm.
The number of battery strings to be monitored depends on the power system type. The SMU
monitors the voltage balance for a maximum of six battery strings.
Figure 7-6 shows the logic diagram for middle point voltage balance monitoring

Figure 7-6 Logic diagram for middle point voltage balance monitoring

Monitoring the Current Balance

When batteries are discharging, the SMU generates a Curr Imbalance Between Batts alarm
if detecting that the maximum current deviation between battery strings exceeds 0.05C10. The
alarm must be manually cleared.
Current balance monitoring depends on the shunt configuration for the power system. Figure
7-7 shows the logic diagram for current balance monitoring.
